The Best Advantages Of Owning Small Dog Breeds

By Mike Hienstat

Owning a dog is one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable experiences in life. Unfortunately many people miss out on this experience thinking that they don't have the time or the space to responsibly take care of one when in reality nothing could be further from the truth. Here are the top five advantages to owning a small dog breed, that will make just about anyone realize just how easy it can be.

One of the most convenient advantages of owning a little dog is that you can do so even if you are currently living in small space such as an apartment. While larger pooches usually require a much more spacious area, the majority of small dog breeds couldn't be happier living in apartments and condos. Fortunately this allows a huge percentage of dog lovers to be able to own pets in situations where they normally would not be able to.

When choosing a pup you do have a very wide array to pick from. It doesn't matter if you prefer breeds with curly tails, pointy ears, an excess of wrinkles, or just small white dog breeds, there is something for you. Since every breed does have traits that they are known for in both their appearance and personality it makes weeding out the ones that don't work for you very easy.

For exercise, you won't have to worry about spending multiple hours per day walking or jogging with your pet as is often the case with medium and large size dogs. Each breed and even individual dog will have its own needs but in general they need only a fraction of the time and effort to keep them healthy and happy. Even though a few popular small dog breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier may be high energy it's still a much more manageable situation for the average owner than dealing with a pooch that's bigger in size.

Owning a dog regardless of its size does mean you'll have some added expenses. But the smaller the pet the less they are. This means everything from food and toys to medicine and veterinary procedures. Small sized dog breeds can save you a ton of cash just because they require less of everything.

An excellent trait that many owners don't even consider, is that little pooches can be extremely good watchdogs. They most likely aren't going to be able to stop an intruder but they may be able to deter them with their barking and alert you to their presence. Many breeds in the terrier group are especially well-known for this characteristic.

As you can see there are a ton of benefits to owning a petite canine, so don't automatically assume you don't have the resources to take care of one. With so many small dog breeds to choose from, you will be sure to find yourself a furry little friend that makes your life complete.
