Factors To Consider So You Know When To Use Booster Seats

By Marie Watson

A booster is often used by parents when they want to upgrade the seat of their son or daughter. When children reach a certain age, they are trained to learn how to sit on their own and these items are a safe way to do so. In fact, there are many countries in the world that require children of certain age groups to be seated in one when inside a vehicle.

This transition is no easy feat though, and must be done at the right time and place. As a parent, you can tell when the right time has come when you are able to notice the essential signs that indicate when to use booster seats. If you are in this stage during the development of your child, then this article is for you.

Foremost, you should make sure the child is at least four years old and weighs at least forty pounds. This is the minimum requirement to use one to ensure their safety. However, if the kid is tall enough, they can also make use of it. Avoid allowing them just because it is their fourth birthday, their safety should be prioritized here.

Safety should always be your main priority, as a parent you want nothing but the best for your son or daughter and always want to protect them. Following this logic, the booster you plan on purchasing should have a lap and shoulder belt. Only having one of these is not enough to ensure security and besides, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Boosters will work best when installed at the back seat of your car. The back area is always safer than being on front, especially the middle portion. This decreases the likelihood of the child from getting hit or absorbing too much impact in case of accidents. Plus, looking after them is much easier because they are in the direct line of vision using a rear view mirror.

There are also some important safety guidelines to consider before you can avail of these items. When in the process of purchasing, always go with a rear facing seat especially if this is the first time of your son or daughter. Going with a forward facing position far too soon is dangerous and can affect the neck development of toddlers.

Before fitting, read the instructions thoroughly to avoid compromising its effects. Remember, the item should be as tightly fitted as possible which means there should be no excessive sideways or forward motion. As a parent, it is your responsibility to check on this regularly.

Usually, the best way to tell when a harness is tight enough is if you can insert two fingers between the chest of the child and the harness. Doing so will assure you that your son or daughter can still breathe and move comfortably. This should be adjusted regularly, especially when wearing bulky clothes or when the kid has gained some weight.

These materials cost money but are worth every dime. You will want to make sure it remains effective, so do not neglect cleaning it regularly and checking on the adjustments. This will ensure its effectiveness and preserving its usage.
