The Merits And Demerits Of A Brainstorming Graphic Organizer

By Thomas Edwards

The current digital world has brought effective advancement not only in the business and health sectors but also in education. From dictating of notes, teachers now make use of graphic organizers to design more suitable teaching aids that enable students to grasp information quickly. The use of visuals such as diagrams and maps has also become part of student's learning, and it is fun to learn the digital way. Considered as an effective learning strategy, the use of brainstorming graphics has been extended to different curriculum areas. Here are the top benefits of brainstorming graphic organizer in a classroom.

The organization of information in a sequential manner using graphic organizers motivates students to learn more and more. Sometimes, learning can be tedious especially when you doing it for long hours. However, images, drawings, webs, and charts draw the attention of a student enabling them to pull together their thoughts. As a result, they can organize and categorize data to aid their understanding.

When learners are responsible for generating information from graphics, they develop skills in identifying the relationship between theories besides broadening their knowledge. Moreover, exposure to graphics enables them to establish new ways of tackling tasks. Hence, this puts them in a better position to learn their mistakes and improvise better learning styles.

It is also an ideal way of improving understanding. A picture depicts a lot, and one can tell what is illustrated through visuals even before you get to read the main content. It is for the same reason that you will find many pictures in a textbook. They allow students to get the general overview of what they are taught in class and create memorability and understanding.

Brainstorming graphics fosters retention. Human beings store lots of information in their mind. When ideas are best understood, it becomes easy to retain them in the brain, making them available in their necessity. As students visualize what they learned, information is assimilated which facilitates to critical thinking. And hence, thoughts can be conveyed in words.

Moreover, they enable learners to improve their achievements. Mostly, this helps people with learning disability as it adds up to classwork so that they can maintain same levels with regular students by the simplification of knowledge attainment. Moreover, there are able to apply the knowledge in examinations and other areas of life, which improves their status.

Above all, graphic organizers hinder students from participating in notes taking during the class. They concentrate more on visual representations rather than engaging in both writing and seeing. Consequently, they lack reference materials for learning which can affect their exam performances. Therefore, teachers should encourage students to partake in all styles which in return have great impacts.

This learning approach does not allow for a good flow of feedback. The importance of having a teacher in a class is enhancing a better conceptual understanding. Additionally, sometimes they will test their students by giving discussion questions in class, which is highly recommended. However, they fail to offer answers in the graphics leaving other students confused between the right answers.
