Difference Between Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils

By Melissa Hall

I'm going to explain to you exactly what the differences are of fragrance oils and essential oils.

Description of Essential Oils

Essential oils are the "essence" of a plant and are extracted from various kinds of plants. They have, throughout history, been used for medicinal purposes. Here are some examples of essential oils that are common in aromatherapy:

Lavendar- Is a calming fragrance

Lemongrass-Refreshing, rejuvenating and balancing

Eucalyptus helps sooth nasal passages

Citrus is an energizing and uplifting fragrance

Patchouli Oil - Tranquility, and helps promote clear breathing

Rosemary calms apprehension

Ylang Ylang-Seduces the senses and is relaxing to the mind

Bergamot Oil- Energizing oil that balances the mind

These are just a small amount of the many essential oils used in aromatherapy. I didn't use essential oils in my candle making except for Lemongrass and I didn't have to use much of it to get a strong fragrance throw. Lemongrass is very affordable too.

Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are manufactured and artificially made to copy natural fragrances. You'll find there exists many different types of fragrance oils and they are usually less costly than essential oils. But even though essential oils are generally more expensive, you generally don't use as much so for some essential oils, it will actually be more cost effective using those rather than fragrance oils, however you definitely need to thoroughly test them in the candles.

Because fragrance oils are only imitations, they do not give aromatherapy benefits like essential oils do, so they can't be used for aromatherapy candles.

Fragrance oils are also manufactured in different grades by concentration so cheaper fragrance oils may be more diluted than more costly oils. You would then need to use more of the oil in your candles for a good scent throw.

Essential oils and fragrance oils..... One is all natural, directly from the plant, and the other is artificially manufactured.
