Basic Information Regarding Vinyl Banners

By Liliana Mills

Vinyl banners are employed for the purpose of outdoor advertising. Most of these used in modern times are digitally printed with large format inkjet printers. These printers are capable of printing full-color, outdoor billboards on one piece of material.

The material that is typically used in the construction of the signs is heavy weight and essentially PVC. Banners can weigh as little as just nine ounces per square yard or as much as 22 ounces. These structures can be designed as single- or double-sided.

Grommets are often installed to help with the hanging of these signs. Hem tapes may be used to adhere to different surfaces, offer lamination protection and allow for neatly fastened hems. The large kinds are usually printed on a material that is like mesh and designed to keep wind from going through it.

Banners come in different styles and are used often for different purposes. Still, it is expected for them to last somewhere between three and five years before they require replacement. Screenprinted, vinyl lettered, digitally printed and painted are the key types of banners used today. The digitally printed styles are usually made with water-based, eco-solvent or solvent-based inks. UV-curable inks are also used. Large format printers are produced by an assortment of popular companies.

The vinyl letter kinds involve application of separate elements that have been cut from self-adhesive vinyl. Usually this material is cut using special computer-operated cutters. Screenprinted types are made through the practice known as screenprinting. During this process, different colors are laid down via screens that include imaged stencil. The ink is then passed through. This may be done manually by hand or automatically through machines and presses. Then there are painted kinds, which are not common today, but include graphics and lettering that has been handpainted.

Banners may be used for a variety of applications. Typically they are installed to promote the logo of a company, school, team or event. Because the material that is used is flexible, and portable, these structures can be used almost anywhere. They are often added to billboards, buildings, tables, trade show tables, stadium flags and the streets.

The high-quality kinds use outside hems to guarantee that grommets are properly secured. Grommets is the name for the nickel holes that allow the banner to be hung on walls, buildings and fence posts. When it is windy, non-fastened grommets will tear holes out of the sign. Hem tapes may also be used for decorative trimming and may prevent the lifting and delamination of hems.

Vinyl banners are made available in an assortment of styles, sizes and shapes. The pieces are mostly used for the purpose of advertising something or someone. The material used is flexible. It is also portable and can be placed in a variety of places, such as sky-high billboards and buildings. The structures might be single- or double-sided.
