Plumbing Problems At Home? Try These Helpful Tips!

By Jill Wilson

Proper plumbing is key to a nice home. Sometimes, you will need to pay special attention to your plumbing but it isn't always necessary to call a plumber. Read on to learn some amazingly useful tips to help you keep your home plumbing in great shape all by yourself!

Make sure exposed pipes are not going to freeze by keeping them heated. Low temperatures can cause these pipes to freeze, causing them to crack and leak. Pipes inside the home can also freeze if they run from outdoors. Be sure that you have a heat lamp or heater near the pipes.

Even though plumbing tools may cost a lot initially, having your own tools will save you money in the long run. Follow free online videos to learn about a number of essential plumbing skills. If you have the correct tools, you need not hire a professional plumber to deal with any minor issues that crop up.

Your septic tank should be pumped out at least once every five years if you want it to stay in optimum working order. This prevents sediment from building up in the tank and causing a backup into your home or causing the failure of the septic system itself. It may be a bit expensive to pump a septic tank, but it will be very expensive to clean up an emergency sewage problem.

To lower the chance that you will have issues with your toilet, do not approach it like it's a trash can. Under no circumstances flush cotton balls or swabs, paper towels, diapers, sanitary pads or other materials that will not dissolve. These items can cause major clogs. Even keep toilet paper use to the minimum necessary.

It's just as harmful, if not worse, to tighten your pipes too much when installing them as it is to leave them too loose. If you over-tighten your pipes, you can crack or otherwise damage the pipes. Only tighten pipes until they stop leaking.

To keep blockages from forming in your pipes, regularly clean them out with the proper tools or chemical cleaners. Toilets, sinks and bathtubs are of the utmost importance to maintain, as are pipes outside of your home and underground.

By now, you have learned a number of great ways to maintain your plumbing. If you use the tips you've read here, you'll be able to solve any emergency and even install your own plumbing for new fixtures without the aid of a professional!
