Learn More About The Accidental Marriage

By Marissa Velazquez

On getting married, every couple is filled with hope of happiness, oblivious of the challenges ahead. In her book The Accidental Marriage, Annette Haws tells the story of Nina and Elliot. The couple is aware of the differences between them even as they decide to get married. They trust their love to bridge the chasm. As they come to discover, there is more in life and marriage that love alone. No relationship can survive on love alone.

When a marriage hits turbulence, the couple has to decide quickly what to stick and what to get rid of. During that time Nina and Elliot must travel light without additional weight that hinders their progress. When the couple meets, they quickly fall for one another. They assume that the strength of their feelings will be the stronghold of their union. However, it turns out that they need to make adjustments early in their marriage for it to survive.

The couple is American but they meet in Scotland. Nina is a student while Elliot is working as a missionary. Their relationship faces some restrictions. Elliot is limited by his commitment to his call as a missionary. Nina is already in another relationship but they are determined to make their union a success.

On returning to America, they are united once again. They appreciate their varying upbringing and views on major issues in their lives. One of the main issues they differ on is the role of a woman in the house. They decide that their love is more important than anything else and continue with their relationship.

To their dismay they are met with the realities of life. They discover that love is not sufficient in all situations. In the early days of their union, they have to deal with a bossy mother-in-law. The two sets of parents do not approve of the relationship. The couple also starts to observe faults in one another more than the strong points.

Their problems are not confined to their house. There are more challenges for the newly weds outside the home. Elliot is a busy student and works full-time. This means he has less time for the relationship as he would like. Nina gets a job as an English teacher in a middle school at a time when women are not embraced in many working places. She has to endure sexual harassment all day. Unfortunately there is nothing she can do about it.

It dawns upon the couple that being successful in a union requires more than just love. They have to work very hard to overcome the challenges coming their way. There are internal and external influences they must deal with. They must give up some of their opinions and views and accommodate one another.

The Accidental Marriage has useful lessons for people who are newly married and those anticipating wedlock. It lacks explicit content that would offend some readers. It emphasizes the need to adapt to the changes in which people are getting married. Reaching compromises and making adjustments is very important. You can make adjustments as a couple or individually.
