Hiring A Divorce Lawyer In Lowell MA Can Be Costly

By Kathleen Powell

Families used to be the cornerstones of healthy societies. Unfortunately, marriages do not last any longer. Divorced people are no longer shunned by society as they used to be. The rate at which couples get divorced has rocketed sky high and the courts are struggling to cope with their case loads. In the process, lawyers that specialize in divorces are making a fortune. When hiring a divorce lawyer in Lowell MA divorcing couples must prepare themselves for hefty bills.

When couples get married they often do not realize that they are not just entering into a bond forged by love. They are also entering into a legal agreement that will have to be cancelled if they decide to divorce. There are numerous laws and regulations governing divorces and only when the courts are satisfied that they have been followed can a separation order be made.

Contested cases are the most expensive divorces. In these cases the couple does not communicate any longer and each partner employs an attorney to act on their behalf. Lawyers charge for their time and contested cases can be protracted. Court appearance can escalate the cost sky high. In addition, contested cases are settled in court and these records are open to the scrutiny of the public and the press.

Contested divorces can be extremely costly. More reasonable couples that can still communicate with each other and that realize that they will have to make certain compromises can save a lot of money. They need only one attorney and if they can come to agreement on most issues privately, they only need the attorney to draw up the documents and to present them to court.

In uncontested cases where both partners are able to reach an agreement without outside help it is not even necessary to hire an attorney. It is also possible to rather engage a counselor that is trained and licensed to handle divorces. Apart from the fact that their services cost only a fraction of what an attorney would charge, they are perfectly capable of drawing up all the necessary documentation for presentation to the court.

The interests of children, if the marriage produced any, are always the highest priority. It is unfortunate that so many divorcing couples, especially in contested cases, use their children as pawns to bargain or to hurt each other. The children are hurt in the process and they often think that they are to blame. In some cases traumatized children can develop serious behavioral problems that can require extended therapy.

Society as a whole would certainly benefit if fewer couples get divorced but sometimes it is best to escape from a nightmarish union. Many people abuse their children and their spouses emotionally, physically and sexually. Others get addicted to drugs and alcohol and refuse to admit that they have a problem and that they need help. Such marriages can become dangerous for the victims.

It is often a whole lot of small issues rather than one massive issue that cause a rift between married people. In many cases marriages can be saved if both partners are willing to attend therapy and to communicate with each other. It is most certainly worth the effort, especially when two people have been married for some time.
