Delray Beach has One of the Top 35 Beaches in the USA

By Jony Mozen

There are 1,800 miles of coastline in Florida and the two miles that caress Delray Beach just happen to be on one of the best family beaches in the whole state! This charming oceanfront beach town features award winning, sparkling, manicured sandy beaches that attract approximately one million visitors a year to its public beach. Travel Holiday magazine voted it as one of the top public beaches in the southeastern United States for swimming and one of the top 35 beaches in the entire country overall. Sand quality, safe waves, and water warmed by Gulf Stream currents were cited as factors contributing to their choice of Delray Municipal Beach.

Designated as a Blue Wave Beach by the Clean Beaches Council for its clean and well-managed beach, the City of Delray Beach contracts with a beach cleaning service and cabana-rental company ensuring year-round enjoyment for residents and visitors. That's one reason why, that out of 1,800 miles of coastline in Florida, the two miles that touch Delray Beach just happen to make it one of the best family beaches in the whole state! Its award winning, sparkling, manicured sandy beaches attract approximately one million visitors a year to this charming beach town. The nonprofit Clean Beaches Council, which runs the most comprehensive, national environmental and public safety beach certification program in the country, have officially certified the beaches in Delray to be clean, healthy, and environmentally well managed. The City of Delray Beach also received recognition from the "American Coastal Coalition" for Delray's pristine quality of their white sandy beaches.

Delray Beach has also won the coveted "All-America City" award in 1993 and 2001. It's the only city in Florida ever to win this prestigious award twice! Located between Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, this South Palm Beach County city is a lively beach town full of galleries, shops, boutiques and fine restaurants. Delray Beach also attracts visitors with their famous Delray Beach Tennis Center, the historic Colony Hotel and the annual Delray Beach Garlic Festival and Delray Affair Art Festival. Delray Beach is one of the cleanest cities in South Florida and public safety is a #1 priority in this safety-conscious beachfront community. Even with its population of 65,000, this Village by the Sea (as it is sometimes called) earns its friendly and welcoming reputation for having the intimacy and community feeling of a small town. During the day, Delray Beach is a relaxing and peaceful family beach town and at night, it transitions into a hip nightspot with dance clubs, bars and restaurants for adults and singles. Additionally, having a downtown playground area and several annual festivals win rave reviews from locals and visitors alike. Wonderful restaurants such as Boston's on the Beach, Caffe Luna Rosa, and Burgerfi are right across the street from the beach so you enjoy your beach day to its fullest.

Overseeing public safety at the municipal beaches, the Ocean Rescue team has received numerous awards for their professional achievement from the USLA, Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association and Emergency Medicine Foundation, which is important when the largest crowd hits the beach on the Fourth of July. People come from miles around to spend the day viewing the sand-sculpting contest, the Beautiful Baby bathing suit contest, the Patriotic Bicycle & Scooter Parade, the 30x60-foot American flag raising, dancing on the beach and at 9:00 pm a live radio broadcast with synchronized music provides background for the famous Grucci fireworks display and its exciting grand finale tribute to our country's birthday.

The rest of the year, you can slip off to a quieter beach experience at the southern end of the beach at Atlantic Dunes Park, nestled in an elevated wooded area with a boardwalk and nature trail. There are picnic tables, public restrooms and a pavilion, plus metered parking across the street. Ocean Rescue Division Li feguards are on duty from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. On A1A, Anchor Park is a public city park across from the beach with picnic tables, barbecue grills, playground, public restrooms, outside showers, and metered parking with easy access to the beach. This pocket park, open 8:00 am till dusk, is a nice, quiet spot for a picnic but be sure to pack everything you need because there are no concession stands. Nearby Sandoway Park, on the same side of the street, has metered parking, restrooms, drinking fountain, and vending machines.
