Skills And Responsibilities Of A Certified Nursing Assistant

By Faye Hunter

Giving assistance to nurses in caring for the patients are the main responsibility of a certified nursing assistant Tulsa. From this primary responsibility comes many other secondary duties that require certain skills from the medical professional. Among the necessary skills are the required trainings and seminars on the proper treatment of patients both in the physical and emotional aspects.

Most vocational schools or community colleges offer training programs for high school graduates who wish to be a certificated nurse aide. After graduating, the student has to apply for certification to increase their chances of employment. There are also private trainings conducted by certified doctors and registered nurses that also provides the necessary skills needed by the aides to perform their job.

One basic skill that should be possessed by a nursing aide is the training on the proper procedure of lifting or transferring patients. This is the most common activity since it is required to change dirty linens and transfer the patient from the bed to a wheel chair to be brought to another place. During the training, the assistants are taught the proper manner of transferring and helping that does require force and ensures that the patient or the medical worker is not harmed in the process.

The administration of basic personal care is also included in the trainings that an assistant undergoes to provide better care for the patients. Personal hygiene activities that include bathing and eating are discussed. This is another necessary skill since most hospital and nursing home residents could not do these basic activities without the help of other people.

Also included in the personal care aspect is the emotional support the aides give to the patients under their treatment. Assistants are also tasked to take vital sign readings of the sick persons and recording them for reference of the doctors. This is usually done during the regular hospital rounds or as often as the attending physician requires.

The cleanliness and orderliness of their area of assignment is also included in the duties of the assistant. They are also the ones that does the straightening up after a feeding session. They are also responsible for the proper disposal of all toxic and hazardous waste and prevent any spread of the infections.

The routine of the assistant is not complete unless they have accomplished the transcription of all the activities that are related to the bodily and medical attention of the patient. It is their obligation to record all the prescriptions, medications, vital sign readings, and even the inflow and outflow of fluids from the patient. They are also the ones tasked to report any sudden modifications in the status of the sick under their care.

There are aide positions that require a 40 hour week. There are also assistants that are employed privately. Aides who are working in hospitals and similar institutions are also subjected to shifting schedules.

The status of employment for home care may be full time or part time. In terms of compensation, nursing aides have comparatively lower wages than registered nurses or practical nurses. This is because there is lesser training involved and lower educational requirements to be a certified nursing assistant Tulsa.
