Moving To Assisted Living: Effective Transition Tips

By Rue Nichols

Those who entertain the possibility of moving into assisted living communities must be thinking about ways on how to make the move easier and stress-free. Yes, it can be stressful like any kind of move but know that there can be ways to make it easier on some level.

Generally, you will be moving from your private home into a much smaller apartment. Typically, apartments range from about 400 square feet up to 800 square feet depending on the number of bedrooms in your apartment. This means many of your belongings simply will not fit. On the one hand, leaving your belongings behind might make you feel sad, but keep in mind that it's easier to deal with less and it's also easier to stay organized. And there are many things you can take with you.

Boxes with family photographs for example, are part of the belongings no one would want to leave behind. The best way to deal with this is to have all photographs digitally scanned and stored in flash drives. Decorating your apartment walls with family photos can still be feasible and actually brings joy though it may provide lesser room in your new apartment as opposed to your previous home.

True that when it's time to give away or sell items it can be easier to give up impersonal items like towels or cookware but can be quite tough to let go of items with personal memories attached. Items like one's favorite books, a comfortable blanket or a favorite chair may be some of those that make us feel truly at home. If so, bring these items with you and forget about the remaining stuff. It may be tough to surrender items however note that life is not about possessions but all about experiences. When you find yourself still battling the idea of letting go of items whether through selling or donating, put them in storage for a while. This gives you time to think about your decision and renting a storage unit generally is a fairly reasonable expense.

While you definitely will meet many new people in your new assisted living community, it is a good idea to select an apartment that is close to friends and family. This way, it's easier to continue attending your local church, going to your club meetings and hanging out with friends and family. Until you feel comfortable in your new surroundings, being close to loved ones can make those first weeks much easier.

Focusing on the positive attributes of assisted living helps. Mainly, you are with less time required for daily chores, you don't have to prepare your own meals and when it comes to tasks lie dressing, bathing, grooming, doing the laundry and housekeeping you have staff members to assist you. Also, you have several activities to keep you busy yet relaxed however you wish to be.
