Effective Strategies For Web Design

By Dean Vincent

Historically if you wanted to create a website you would use Photoshop and Dreamweaver which meant uploading it via FTP to a server manually. In today's world of websites the majority used a content management system such as Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, etc.

Joomla is a highly powerful content management system that can integrate various functionality into itself. For example, a booking system for the hospitality market can serve the available slots when a customer wants to reserve a room for a specific date. There is a wide range of extensions that can be applied to the Joomla content management system to scale to your specific needs.

One content management system that is covered in the open source market is Drupal. The installation isn't that complex but later customisation can be whereby it requires experienced software engineers to administrate this system.

Most blogging websites use Wordpress. It is rarely used for feature-rich websites. However, it is still one of the most popular content management systems available.

The administration back-end of Joomla would require training to new users of the system. Some of the tasks users would carry out would be uploading photos, updating content and approving requests that have been made to visitors of a website. The Joomla administrator will need to know how to do most of these administrative tasks that still doesn't quite qualify to be a Joomla master.

The latest version of Joomla currently stands at 2.5 which is a Long Term Support release. Many Joomla website owners are still using older versions which have (or are about to) reach their end-of-life and will need to be upgraded. Not upgrading to the latest version of Joomla poses a security risk leaving your website open to hackers.

Good web design is focused on how well you can use a content management system. It is best to ensure you have the appropriate tools such as a search engine friendly URL component, a backup and restore solution, a custom form designer extension, etc.

In conclusion, your business website must use a suitable template that matches your brand. There are a number of custom templates available to select. If the template chosen doesn't meet expectation you should get a professional designer to create one for you or buy a commercial tool like Artisteer and do it yourself.
