Improving Your Telephone Interview Skills

More and more frequently telephone interviews are becoming a basic first step for lots of companies in their recruitment process. Phone interviews are used in order to screen candidates and make a short list of candidates for a face to face interview. Sometimes phone interviews are used for candidates who are out of town and would have to travel a long way otherwise.

When you are looking for a job it is important to prepare for a phone interview as you would a normal face to face interview. You should be aware that a recruiter could ring you up at any moment to discuss a role. Make sure you perfect your over the phone interview techniques early on.

Make sure you make a list of your strengths and skills in order to answer any questions that may be asked. Research what are the typical questions that are asked on phone interview.

Keep your CV to hand and near the phone so that you have easy access to it when you are taking an interview call. Make a short list of your accomplishments so that you aren't left tongue tied. Make sure that if you are on your mobile you turn your call waiting off so you do not get interrupted.

If a telephone interview is arranged but the time doesn't suit you always rearrange. You need to be at ease when the conversation happens and in a room where pets and children are not present. It goes without saying to switch off any TV's or radios present.

Unless you know for certain that your mobile reception will be perfect always arrange to conduct your interview on a landline.

Speaking on the phone isn't always as easy as you might think, it is a good idea to practice before a phone interview. Try to run through a mock interview with a friend or relative if possible.

During the interview make sure that you don't chew or eat, keep a glass of water handy and try to keep answers short and to the point.
