GCE Examinations: Importance Of Getting Excellent Scores

By Arah Sho

Any Singaporean student who is eyeing a university scholarship in Commonwealth countries like the United Kingdom should be able to pass the GCE O-level and the GCE A-level examinations with high scores. Ordinary level exams are taken by students that are in their fourth or fifth year in secondary school. On the other hand, advanced level exams are given to second-year junior college students. Both O and A-level exams are forms of standardized exams that Singaporean students have to go through at the end of each stage of school to qualify to a higher level course.

Public Service Commission offers an overseas scholarship grant to students who obtained excellent scores in GCE examinations. Aside from the Overseas Merit Scholarship, other types of government scholarship that PSC offers to deserving students include the President's Scholarship, Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship and Singapore Police Force Overseas Scholarship.

Although PSC selects and grants scholarships to students with the highest scores in Advanced level examinations, obtaining an excellent score in Ordinary level is just as important as being on top list of the examinees that took A-level examinations. This is because the selection would actually start two years earlier, when students in secondary level take Ordinary level exams for GCE. PSC would approach the schoolmasters of students who have the highest scores in O-level exams and ask them to apply for university scholarship.

The Overseas Merit Scholarship is considered as the most important type of scholarship that PSC offers. Singaporean students who want to qualify for OMS scholarship may consider tuition centers that provide lessons which will help them learn the format and style of the examination and gain plenty of examination practice. Those who struggle in particular subjects like Economics may find it important to look for a reliable agency that specializes in JC Economic tuition.

Learning centers that specialize in JC econs tuition also have a copy of previous examination papers with detailed answers. But the ideal tuition centers are aware that the content of previous exams may not completely reflect the syllabus for the current school year. Thus, the center a student should find must have both a collection of past exams and the current syllabus.
