The Significance Of Ecotourism

By Michael Gomez

Ecotourism is one of the growing development strategies to many countries. It enables them to create revenue while taking care of the environment. Developers formulate plans to improve such ecosystem and designate this area to be protected site. The idea is still not that warmly embrace by some locals who see this as a waste of time and effort. The area is mainly the source of their food and shelter. They are afraid that ecotourism might destroy these sources. People are naturally pessimistic on something that has uncertain potential revenue.

Local should fully participate on the idea to make ecotourism a successful project. Teaching them to be optimistic on the idea can surely able to win some supporters, by letting them see that there is surely a potential change in their lives if they cooperate on this project for their family and the environment. They should understand that ecotourism allows them to gain a lot of benefits from it. They will improve their lives while taking care of their environment. Ecotourism will also limit the impact of human-related activities that can harm the environment.

There are core principles that surround the idea of ecotourism and these are:

Ecotourism creates awareness of the political, environmental and social issues of the country concerned

It helps empower local communities by building environmental and cultural awareness

Minimizing industrial impact on the environment that can cause harmful effect to everyone

Ecotourism ensures that the experience is positive for all parties which includes visitors and hosts

Knowledge is another factor that can make ecotourism a successful one. It can help a lot of people understand more about the area and the area's local habitat. It will be easy to determine on how one can impact another and how it eventually change the whole area. The local communities know the importance of this relationship among the living things. They get their food and other necessities on what is around them and it there are changes they are the ones who will feel the effect of it. Which why there is a need to address the culture that governs people's relationship with the environment.

For every project the local communities should be included. They know more and understand the area and its complex ecosystems better than anyone else involved in the project. Everyone should keep in mind that the aim of ecotourism is to achieve sustainable and responsible tourism practices to the benefit of all and the detriment of none.
