Why Team Building Does Not Work

By Carla Rossouw

Have you ever thought of giving up on doing team building activities because nothing happens to your team? There must be something wrong. Below are some reasons why team building fails. Analyze them to improve how you do things.

Some people stab others on their backs. Saying bad things to someone when he does not know it and saying good things to him when he is in front of you is of the most dishonorable things that you can do as a person. On the other hand, this backstabbing issue is very common in teams. If you cannot solve it, team building will always fail as the members will have distrust.

Some people do not respect others. One way of showing your respect is to wait for a person to finish talking before you claim your turn. However, in some meetings, some people do interrupt. If this happens a lot in team building activities, some people will never be able to speak their minds. Therefore, you need to teach the members to respect each other by listening.

Some people love to whine. They love to say their opinions even to the slightest issue. This can be annoying and can give out a negative aura to your team especially when you are doing a team building activity. If you cannot stop someone from whining too much, you should balance the atmosphere by cracking some jokes or telling humorous stories relevant to the situation.

Some people hold back too much. While it is a fact that not everyone is the same and there are people who cannot express themselves too well, you should still encourage people to at least open up. Being open is a good way to bond the members together. If the members are too reserved, they will not be able to maximize the purpose of the team building activities. Break the walls that surround them by breaking yours. Open up and they will surely follow.

Some people are just too lazy. There are some people who are very negligent and laidback. They do not want to participate in all activities because they think it is boring and a waste of energy. You need to encourage the people to participate. It is good if they can do it willingly. But if not, you may have to discretely entice them. You may use incentives or bonuses just for them to join the activity and hopefully learn to grow from it.

The event has too many dead airs. Dead airs are boring. If you are going to plan an event, you should make sure there are things going on a certain times. You can create breaks but not too many and not too long else your team will end up bored.

Team building Gauteng can become a really huge success if you know which things and issues you need to attend to before everything starts.
