From The First Edition Book Of Mormon

By Cornelia Reyes

The first edition Book of Mormon is a priced possession for any collector and has been sort by libraries and historians across the world. The original text is an indication of its origin in New England with uncorrected and inconsistent spelling mistakes, tenses as well as numbers. It relies on Jacobean English and retains the original flow before changes were made.

The sacred scriptures of the Latter Day Saint Movement capture the epistles of ancient American prophets who existed between 2200 BC and 421 AD. Joseph Smith published it in 1830 as writing taken from the Plates of Nephis. The original writings, according to Smith, were referred to as reformed Egyptians and had the scriptures engraved on golden plates.

It is the contribution of a number of prophets over time, with the last one being Moroni who buried the scripts on the hills where New York currently stands. Moroni returned to the earth as an angel in 1827 to reveal where the scripts had been hidden. He instructed Joseph Smith to begin the work of translation. The message he was giving to the church was that Christ would restore His church that had been distorted over the years.

The original text discussed doctrines within Christian circles including atonement, eschatology, Adam and Eve and the original sin as well as redemption of the soul and body. Other topics highlighted included how the Latter Day church would be organized. It also claimed that Christ made an appearance to inhabitants of American after resurrection.

These scriptures are holy and special to followers of the Latter Day Church movement. It represents the chronological interaction God had with Americans in history and is therefore holy. It is structured like other religious scripts that are divided into verses and chapters. It also is a collection of writing by different authors.

The linguistic style used in writing the scripts is the Early Modern English and closely relates to the King James Version of the bible. Over the years, it has been translated wholly or partly up to 108 languages. Smith gives different accounts of his process of translation and how the book eventually became a reality. He had spectacles that were prepared especially for the purpose of translation. Some of the content, according to his scribes, was sealed. This means that everything has not been revealed yet.

Several people have signed affidavits about the origin of this scripture. One of the neighbors who helped Smith in translating the scripts was called Martin Harris. He assisted at the initial stages and even sold his land to clear the printing bill. The first copies were sold in March of 1830 which were translated with the assistance of Oliver Cowdery after Martin eloped with the first 168 pages.

The first edition Book of Mormon has its first page as a translation of The Very Last Leaf which was read from the golden plates. It seeks to show the great deeds God is doing to the Americans beginning with their forefathers. It was meant for distribution and use by all nations of the world.
