Procedure For Orange County Piano Refinishing

By Judy Sullivan

Pianos are investments which should not be taken lightly. The higher quality of these musical instruments has a very high market price so care should be taken to avoid damaging them. Though sometimes they can get damaged and the good news is that they can be refinished. By doing this, you will be restoring it to its original state. There are three processes used in Orange County Piano refinishing technique as explained below.

To start with, using the stripping method remove all the old varnish and stain. To be able to perform this task, you need to first dismantle all the hardware parts. Make sure to keep each pat separately to avoid confusion in the end. Label the packaging material to easily identify these parts when putting them back. Keep them in safe place where you can easily access them.

Since this kind of work may pose some hazards, it is important to make sure that you have personal protective equipment on to protect your hands. You need the right gloves to protect your hands and a mask for protecting your respiratory system. Other important tools are paint strippers; steel wool, plastic scrapper and thinner. These will help you in removing the layers of paint or varnish easily.

Before embarking on stripping, make sure that the area where you are working is well ventilated. This helps to reduce the negative effect of fumes to your body. After you have done that, using a paint stripper, start by removing varnish first and then the stain. It is not recommendable to use water-based stripping solution because wood has ability to absorb water, which can find its way to the instrument. Using thinner, wash the stripped surface ensuring that not a single stain has been left behind.

The next step involves carrying out the repair work on the instrument. This is only possible after all the stain is cleared and cleaning is done accordingly to enable you to see the nicks, scratches and dents that might have resulted from the previous steps. Two methods are used to handle these damages.

The first method involves use of steam. Small amounts of steam can be used to make the timber to rise and refill any dented places on the surface of the instrument. This procedure requires a lot of skills because if not done properly it can ruin the surface of the instrument.

The other technique is by use of fillers which help to seal the damaged parts. It is necessary to select filler that is of the same chemical make up as the stain and varnish you will use for the finishing process. If the chemical makeup does not match it can cause a reaction on the color which will be used to stain hence the surface will be uneven. After this a number of stain coats are applied using a cotton rag or foam brush. It should be rubbed in thoroughly while wiping away the excess stain to avoid streaking.

The last process involves finishing using a varnish. The most commonly used varnishes are polyurethane, shellac and lacquer. If you are not conversant with these finishing products, be sure to seek advice from Orange County piano refinishing professional. Most professionals prefer using nitrocellulose lacquer; however, this requires one to apply a number of coats while removing the excess until the proper limit is met. All these procedures require a lot of skills, so hiring a professional would be a good thing to do.
