Simple Wedding Ideas That Minimize Your Costs

By Lizbeth Nathaniel

While many people spend as much as $30,000 or more on a grand wedding extravaganza, many couples prefer a more modest affair. There are many ways to create a beautiful wedding on a strict budget. Here are a few tips and tricks that will bring down the cost of your special day without sacrificing the romance.

Many brides spend $1,000 or more on a wedding dress and this doesn't even factor in the alterations, shoes and veil. In some cases you can rent a wedding dress or you could buy a used wedding dress from a site such as Craigslist, eBay or browse local consignment stores. Rather than have a veil, put your hair up and add a few little flowers for a cute hairstyle.

Another item on the wedding needs list that can eat up the budget is the invitations but today this should not be the case as creating and designing your own invitations from an online company. These can cost just $1 per invitation. Another option would be to do away with the paper and send online invitations. Aside from being free, you can easily track those who can come and can't come too. Reminders also are being sent out to guests that add to its being functional.

The wedding cake also can be quite expensive, and some are more than $1,000. Rather than shop at a wedding cake designer's shop, check out your local bakeries and even grocery store bakeries. They often have much lower prices than a custom cake designer. You also could opt for a small pretty cake for you and your spouse to cut and serve cupcakes or sheet cakes for the rest of the guests or even a buffet with candy, brownies, cookies and other homemade goodies. As long as it tastes good, guests are sure to enjoy their dessert.

Hosting your wedding and reception at home or perhaps at a friend's home is a great way to save a bundle of money. You can rent a few tables and chair purchase floral centerpiece from your local San Clemente florist. Most florists also have websites, so you can select what you need, when you need it delivered and do it all in just minutes. Check out what your nearby Laguna Beach florist, Dana Point florist or Carlsbad florist has to offer. Chances are you can purchase some lovely centerpieces, a small bridal bouquet and a few other odds and ends for a great price.

To cut costs for the reception, limit the amount of alcohol you serve and consider opting for a hearty buffet dinner rather than a sit down meal that must be served to guests. You can set out trays of simple appetizers such as fruit and cheese plates to tide guests over before dinner is served. If you wish to serve alcohol, consider just serving wine, beer and one type of cocktail rather than having an open bar.
