Planning A Garage Sale Can Be Fun And Informative

By Ina Hunt

As things pile up around the house, in the garage or storage shed, it might be time to get rid of them. Many of these things are not being used and someone may find them interesting or just exactly what they need for their collection of stuff. The idea of a yard or garage sale can help you clear some of this material out and you can learn so much by planning a garage sale for the next nice weekend.

The planning that goes into a garage sale is the same as would go into any small, temporary business. You are offering stuff for purchase and you want to make it easy to browse. Whether it is actually set inside the garage, completely, or fans outside to the yard or driveway, it must be organized.

The garage should be cleaned up and have plenty of lights available. The large door should, of course, be open. This makes it easy for people to understand there is no danger in going in. Tables should be placed, if the garage is large enough, to display anything that is too small to hang or set on the floor. Tables can be set outside of this space also.

Make sure that all of the materials on display are clean. Presenting dirty items, especially if these are clothing or bedding, is a big turn off. People will usually not even look but move on down the road to the next yard sale. Hang clothes up with a simple hanging rod made from a pipe or rope strung between two walls or posts.

All tools can be displayed, either on hanging pegs or around the work bench. Any tools that are rusty can either be dipped in a petroleum jelly and wiped down or simply placed in a tub which is marked as is. Many people like to look through these kinds of tubs, thinking they are going to find something interesting. Often what you may not think is unique may be to them.

Electrical appliances, lamps, radios or other items must work if you are charging for a working item. That means that there must be plenty of electricity available. Extension cords may have to be run especially if the tables are out in the yard. Many people do buy some of the strangest things and weirdest lamps but they also want them to work. This will help secure a larger price.

Having a cash box with a lock is something that is very important. A pad of paper is also nice to have as well as a couple of pens or pencils. The number of people that usually show up are an interesting group in and of themselves. Watch for the professionals that arrive, usually, first thing in the morning, often before you actually open for business.

Getting organized, within your home, begins with having the proper places to locate the things you wish to have around you. Getting rid of things and making a few dollars while doing it, is something to consider. A rental unit for these items is costly and, you must agree, these items probably will not ever be looked at or used again.
