The Importance Of Dog Nail Clipping

By Rosella Campbell

Studies say that people with pets live longer than those who do not. Well, this is absolutely true. Your pets are your natural antidepressants. They jump for joy at the sight of you going home from work. They follow you around and are always ready to listen to your troubles and your incessant rantings. They are the ones who love you most than anyone else in the world.

Dogs are among top choices for household pets. This is because they are extremely loyal and patient. They are gentle with kids and are brave enough to guard your house from intruders and unwanted visitors. In exchange for the many good things they have done and will continue to do for you, all they really require is some love and care from you. You can start by making sure that they have everything they need, such as clean water and good food. You should also make sure they are clean by giving them baths and dog nail clipping.

Keeping your furry friend clean is part of responsible pet ownership. It is also essential for his physical health, because you keep him away from illnesses by just keeping him clean. A dog who has a positive disposition is a dog who will welcome cuddles and hugs and playful banters. This will lead to a bonding session that will be beneficial to both pet and owner.

Most pet owners just give their pets occasional baths and flea inspections as part of hygienic routine. In reality, the trimming of the nails of the mutt is a very important part of this routine, too. This will not only make your dog look tidy and immaculately neat, it will also protect his nails. If you do not take the time to cut them, they might get super long and just get broken due to daily activities. For canines, a broken nail can be extremely painful.

Dogs walk on their toes instead of the pads, which makes long nails hard for them to walk. This can even result to splaying of the pads as he adjusts to the nail growth. This can also add pressure to his legs, which might get strained.

Untrimmed nails can also cause sore feet, legs, and hips. This is because some dogs may find it uncomfortable to displace their body weight on their toes. Over time, this wrong stature can lead to the development of arthritis.

Trimming the nails are not that easily done, as pet owners are very much aware. Incorrect cutting may cause pain and bleeding. It can also traumatize the dog. This is why they leave it to the experts. In reality, it would be better to do it yourself as it makes the dog more comfortable with the process.

The first thing that you should do is to make sure that your dog is comfortable. Condition him to feel that though it might hurt, you are there and that he can trust you not to purposely harm him. It will also be good to prepare treats for before and after every session.

Determine where the quick is. It is the blood vessel found on each claw, and severing it can cause it to bleed. Prepare styptic powder or cornstarch to stem bleeding in case you cut it too short. Cut in small bits, at a 45 degree angle. File after.
