Facts Related To Breast Implants Merrillville Indiana Residents Should Know

By Dorothy Sullivan

Breast augmentation (or mammoplasty) is one of the commonest surgical operations performed worldwide. The reasons as to why persons may request to have this operation range from the need to have larger breasts to the correction of congenital developmental anomalies to the effecting of sex change among others. The operation is facilitated by prosthesis. There are a number of things on breast implants merrillville indiana residents need to know about.

Prostheses are of two main types. The first is the silicone implant so named because of the silicone gel that it contains. The outer shell is made of rubber. This type is more preferred because it has a more naturally feel. Its main disadvantage is the fact that it is less malleable. The saline type contains saline within a rubber shell. It is more malleable hence can be inserted through smaller surgical incisions.

Different techniques can employed when placing an implant in position. One of the approaches is below the breast, another is around the nipple (periareolar) and the third is through the axillary region (under the arm). An incision (cut) has to be made in each of these regions for the insertion of the prosthesis to be done. The exact site of placement is between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle.

The surgery can be done in an inpatient or outpatient facility. General anesthesia is commonly used with local anesthesia being reserved for selected cases. The appropriate incision is made, the implant placed in position and stitching done. The entire exercise typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. As soon as the anesthesia wears off, you can be released to go home (usually the same day).

Like is the case with any surgical operation, there are a number of risks that are associated with breast augmentation. In the immediate term, the possible complications include leakage of silicone gel or saline, infections, nerve injury and excessive bleeding. Later on, there is a risk of rupture, scarring, displacement of the implants, leakage of saline or silicone gel and alteration in nipple sensation among others.

The results of breast augmentation tend to vary from one person to another. Whereas some people experience a huge positive change, others are largely not satisfied and may even require a repeat. Differences are caused by factors such as magnitude of the problem, technique used and type of implant. Adjusting your expectations will determine whether or not the results will be acceptable.

When you are released from hospital, the incision site will be covered with a gauze and there may also be some surgical drains inserted into the wound. These help in getting rid of excess fluid. They are usually removed within a few days of the operation. There may be some pain and swelling but these can be easily managed using over the counter pain relievers or drugs that will be prescribed by your doctor.

Preparing for this operation is quite easy. All you need is to be fit for the operation and to be an adult of at least 18 years of age able to give consent. During the preparation, it is important that you have a discussion with your surgeon on all the available options. Smokers need to stop the habit for at least two months before they are operated.
