Some Facts Concerning Total Laser Resurfacing

By Laura Clark

One of the main signs of aging is wrinkling of the skin. Superficial lines and scars may also become more prominent. These effects may also be seen if one is exposed to excessive sunlight. There are several forms of treatment that can be used to restore the youthfulness of skin lost either due to old age or disease. Total laser resurfacing has emerged as one of the most useful treatments for the condition in Cincinnati.

Before we look at how this method of treatment achieves its effects we need to have an idea of how the superficial lines and wrinkles come about. The underlying problem in both of these cases is the aging of collagen fibers. Collagen is an important type of connective tissue found within the skin. When the collagen ages it loses its tautness and this is reflected as lots of redundant skin.

In laser resurfacing, a laser beam is used to cause damage to the aged collagen tissue which will provide an opportunity for new collagen to regenerate. The effects of the treatment take a few weeks to become evident. While most people show remarkable results after a single session, others require several of them. Additional treatments are usually given at intervals of 6 weeks to allow for formation of new collagen between the sessions.

The treatment can be offered to anyone as there are no major contraindications. The preparation is minimal which makes it possible to offer the treatment as soon as it has been prescribed. Perhaps the only cause for concern is the fact that there is a bit of invasiveness that may lead to bleeding. For this reason, one is advised to stop any drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding. These include blood thinners, aspirin and nicotine.

The procedure is typically done in the office or in the outpatient department of a hospital. A day case is a procedure that is done and one is allowed to home on the same day. Although the procedure is usually painless, there may be a need for light sedation or topical anesthesia if one has very sensitive skin. The whole procedure usually takes about an hour. Apart from the rapid results, there is also the benefit of fewer side effects.

The time needed for healing tends to vary. The main determinant is the depth of the peel. Generally, however, about 3 to 7 days are needed. One may experience some itching over the treated area but this will resolve within a few days. Some people may also may also notice reddening of the skin but this too normalizes in a few days. Persons with light skin tones are more likely to be affected by this problem.

Dressings are not a must after the procedure has been conducted. However, there are some recovery products that are available. Hyper emollient creams, antibiotics and sun blocks are among those that are most commonly prescribed by skin specialists. Make up is usually helpful in persons that have excessive reddening of treated area in light skinned individuals as are bleaching agents in dark skinned persons affected by pigments.

Laser resurfacing continues to increase in demand by the day particularly due to the major advances in the techniques that are employed. The main determinant of success is the magnitude of the problem. The number of sessions required also vary depending on the type of problem involved and its severity.
