The Quick and Easy Way to Learn to Sing

By Larry D. Holder

So you have decided that you would like to sing, and sound better than you do now? Well this is a great place to start to gather information on being taught how to sing. We all (or at least most of us) enjoy singing as we go about our daily tasks, or even joining in with the karaoke on a Friday night. But have you ever had the desire to learn to sing properly? Perhaps even to aim to sing in front of an audience? Going for singing lessons is great, you'll get so much more out of your voice by training it properly. One of the important things that you will learn in singing lessons by professionals such as Brett Manning, or through a learn to sing class, is proper breathe control. Without knowing this, you can't expect to get very far.
[How To Sing]

Wherever you decide to have your singing lessons, you will be able to learn various exercises to help you with the very basics of singing, and breathing in the right way. People seem to get the wrong idea about singing lessons and make it much harder than it needs to be. Granted you will have to put some effort in and spend time between lessons practicing yourself, but all the work will be worth it in the end.The whole point of learning to sing is because you want to enjoy it, and to get the full amount out of your lessons you will need a fair bit of tuition. This is where if you decide to have one on one tuition you will make a rather large hole in your wallet as the weeks and months go by.

Many people have found it a lot easier, not to mention cheaper to learn to sing by using CD's and DVD's to help them to visualise exactly what they should be doing. There are many singing courses around that offer CD's to help you, but you really do need to be careful which one you go for. Read everything about learning to sing this way, listen to examples, see what qualifications the person who is making the CD's has. If you go for a Singing Success type course you will have CD's and a DVD which you can listen to and play over and over again until you are happy with your progress. Compare this type of learning to sing with the cost of paying a teacher on an hourly basis, and you will see that learning to sing in this way will be less expensive than learning with a personal teacher.

After all the main aim of taking singing lessons is to uncover your singer within and allow your song to be heard. Having singing lessons should be fun, but it is also hard work.Singing can bring huge pleasure to people, and if you have the desire to be able to sing better than you can now, then why not look into it?See how much it is going to cost you for one on one lessons with a vocal trainer, maybe even try out a lesson or two. Also take a look at the systems available via the internet and compare before you make a decision.I think the best way to learn how to sing is to keep practicing, keep going to lessons, or keep listening to your CD's, and then one day you will realise that yes, you can now sing quite happily and will more than likely have even increased your pitch along the way. Most importantly though, you will be able to enjoy your singing much more.

Many people will maintain quite strongly that singing is a natural ability that you are born a singer or you're not. Now I will concede that there are many 'natural' singers in the world and I wouldn't even be surprised if the vast majority of professional singers were naturally gifted. But given will and determination almost anyone can learn to sing.

But how does a 'non-singer learn to sing. Well it's down to three main elements: training, technique and above all else practice. Don't think for one moment that professional singers walk on stage and start singing. They don't, they've all got their favourite warm up routines, most of them will clear their throats and give it a good wash by drinking a large glass of water. Nothing more. Watch a singer on stage and see how often he takes a sip of water, water is oil for the vocal chords and when they are not on stage they practise constantly.

OK but how do I learn to sing. Well for me the key lies in breath control, if you can't control your breath then you'll not be able to sing properly. It's logical, think about it: the wind coming through your mouth is what pushes out the sound, if it is not coming at a clear consistent rate then the sound (song) will be all broken up.

To understand how we all should be breathing observe a baby in its cot. Notice the way its belly swells up with each breath it takes? That's because it is using its diaphragm. Now no one taught it to breathe that way except nature and I do think, in cases like this nature knows best. As we get older we get lazy and take shot breaths through our chests. In order to sing properly you've got to go back to been a child and re-learn how to use your diaphragm. The first thing you need to do then is discover how much control, or the lack of it, you have over your breath.

To get a physical feel for what your breathing is really like try this. Place your left hand over your stomach, with your thumb on your belly button, place your right hand on top. Now take a deep breath in through your nose and let your hand feel the expansion in your stomach as your belly fills up with fresh oxygen. Now try and hold it there and count to five, it's difficult I know, especially if this is your first time. OK it is time to exhale on a slow count to five release your breath mellow and slow, conserving every last bit of it. Was it difficult?

The above breathing exercise is the most basic breathing exercise you can get, it is one you should do every day - four or five times a day. It's something you can do on the train, walking down the street, standing looking in through a shop window and no one will ever know you are doing it. Given a little time and practise you will soon learn to master your breathing and as you do start to increase the breathing count - eight, twelve, fifteen and as far as you can go.

One final word of advice as regards breathing properly while singing, When singing proper breathing needs to become second nature to you, you've got to learn to do it without thinking. Get a good technique, learn how to breath properly and you'll be amazed at just what difference it makes to your singing. We've looked at how important breathing is if you want to learn to sing but it's impossible to go much further in an article like this.
