The machines that are used to test hearing loss are called audiometers. The devices are typically used as ear, nose, throat facilities, and audiology doctor offices. Typically these include embedded hardware connected to headphones, as well as a test button that is controllable through basic personal computers.

Sometimes the devices are used in conjunction with bone vibrators as a way to check conductive hearing systems. Hardware and software meters are also included and come in a variety of models. Meters attach to personal computers and can be operated from home for hearing tests. Still, results from these tests are usually not as accurate or reliable because there is no standard when it comes to calibration.

Models that are computer based tend to give the most efficiency with results. The structures are also quite expensive compared to other software. Usually these are applied at audiology centers, research facilities, hospitals and other similar facilities that put much emphasis on having the correct results.

Audiometers that are used consistently must be checked for proper calibration. It is crucial that the display levels match the stimulus being sent to the test subject. The proper calibration is important for getting accurate results that remain consistent, regardless of where or how the test is administered. Furthermore, these measurements are the best way to classify and quantify the loss. Audiometric Calibration System or Ear Simulator System may be used to calibrate.

The word audiometry is taken from words in the Latin language meaning to measure and hear. The definition for this is the ability of a person to hear. The field is mostly focused on hearing capability at certain levels, but there is also science focused on the ability of a person to distinguish between varying pitches, sounds and intensities. These machines may also be used to measure acoustic reflex and Otoacoustic emissions. Results that are from the test may be used by doctors for diagnosis.

There are numerous retailers that deal in the sale of meters. The prices for the machines will differ depending on the type. The models that provide more accurate and precise results tend to have a higher price tag and are therefore used mostly in professional settings. There are also many models made for at-home use as well.

Hearing loss can be caused by various things. It may be total or partial inability. The main problem is lowered sensitivity to sounds typically heard. Usually the amount of loss is determined based on the level of volume that must be increased before sound can be heard.

Still, these are not known to produce the best results. Calibration is key when it comes to the devices. Hearing loss may be temporary, total, partial or permanent, and can be caused by a variety of factors.
