Spill Containment Pallets Reduce Risks

By Alyssa Riggs

There are certain risks as well as various safety concerns involved in practically any activity, whether the threat be to the environment or to the people performing it. Many of these factors can be eliminated by following regulations that have been put in place. Others stemming from leaks and spills could be avoided by employing the use of the right spill containment pallets.

Liquids come in many varied forms and each pose its own list of potential concerns and issues. Sometimes the matter may be with the toxicity of the substance, while at others it may be a simple matter of how simple it will be to clean the mess created by leakage or a spill. Having the containers stored on the right base could make these items considerably less risky.

Liquids may be the first thing one thinks of when spills are mentioned, but dried products are not without their own issues. Substances such as sand, pellets, lye, rice and other grains can be quite messy or even dangerous if not properly kept within its container. Even without toxic risk, these items could cause bodily harm should someone slip on some that has spilled to the floor.

Generally speaking, agencies such as OSHA are concerned with safety issues of all sorts and issue mandatory regulations that control how certain substances should be handled, stored and dealt with. This is a matter of making conditions better for both the environment and the people who are charged with the care of said materials. Many problems are avoided simply by using the right pallet for storage.

This is a platform of sorts that a product sits on to keep it up off the ground. Pallets come in multiple sizes and shapes to handle varied types of containers. They make transportation safer, easier and more secured and also manage to keep any spillage or leakage maintained in a defined area until someone can get around to cleaning the mess.

They are available in a multitude of styles, sizes and materials, each with particular benefits but all designed to serve the same basic function of containment. The reason they are made of different forms of both metal and plastic is because not all substances are compatible with each other. Certain products could cause chemical reactions or even corrosion if they come in contact with each other.

Aside from construction materials, the design patterns and containment systems vary by model. For instance, some are made with indented compartments that will hold spilled product in individual cups, while others may allow the leaks to flow through a grate but hold everything within a single bowl. Which option is best may depend upon the product being stored or it may just be a matter of personal choice.

Simply choosing spill containment pallets that are best suited to the materials being stored could save a business a lot of time and money in case of leakage. They make clean up much more productive since all of the product is kept within a designated area. They also reduce the risks of bodily harm to employees and contamination of other substances in the surrounding area.
