How To Dispose Off Spec Chemicals

By Amanda Baird

You may have out of date or off spec chemicals generated at your own business and how to dispose them becomes your new problem. So, how do you really dispose them when they can no longer be of use for you. It is greatly recommended to find someone that can readily use or reclaim them before deciding to dispose them.

The manufacturer can often times take it back and reuse it for various reasons. The company will then reformulate the materials to be used for whatever they intend to. But, if someone can legitimately take and use them then it is not illegal as long as the intentions will be good. If it is the other way around, then a possible charge can be thrown against the person.

Same status will happen if these materials are used and place on the ground or anywhere which can result to some risks. An unused substance must be considered as misuse for it to be known as a hazard. But, if it can be used for certain processes then it is not. If no one can readily reclaim it then dispose them properly.

As you can be a misuse generator, you must evaluate all your unused substances in accordance with a specific rule to determine if it is dangerous substance or the other way around. You can evaluate them using knowledge of chemical and physical properties of the various materials. Or, you can do analyzing a sample of it.

You need to identify if a certain substance is on your lists of dangerous substance or just a piece of it. If the materials are no longer of importance for you and no one else seems want it too then you may just dispose it. It is not easy as you think if may be though. Do not just directly go to the landfill and you are good to go.

Instead, you are required to send them directly to some tested storage for dangerous chemicals for treatment and other disposal facility. You can surely find some in other places if not in your own area. Do not throw them immediately anywhere as it can lead to various risks to happen. You also need to have a permit if you will burn everything down to be used as energy.

Many will use them as energy recovery so they choose to burn them down and make them a fuel or anything that cannot be its normal function. If it is so, a permit is needed for the plan to be carried out. Generators or people who are handling them are responsible for knowing the status of the materials.

Generators of off spec chemicals must also follow the rules that require proper management while on the site, use of proper chemical transporter, use of proper manifest and record keeping and other reporting requirements. If you can generate more than the expectation then you have to file a report. The report will include the information about the materials that you have generated.

A report is not just a simple report as it must contain all the details about the off spec chemicals you are carrying. Consider the previous years of generating these materials and not just the present times you are having them. For you to be more informed, you need to consult for some guidance regarding waste management.
