Common Mistakes In Setting Personal Goals

By Dan E. Whitcomb

Every person's ability to be successful in personal goal setting mainly depends on himself. Failure, likewise will depend on whether or not the person is determined, diligent, and persistent. Some, though, stay at the middle and choose not to set goals. Here are the five main reasons why they refuse to do so.

You need to be ambitious but it is practical to start modestly. It is not necessary to come up with goals that are too vague or enormous. It is possible to be overcome by lofty aspirations and quit prematurely without attaining anything. Be aware of possible stumbling blocks so you will know how to cope when these come along unexpectedly.

Be a positive thinker. The struggles may be too heavy to bear if you are easily troubled with negative thoughts. It is important to look at the entire thing from an upbeat perspective. At the same time, makes sure that your objectives are not too general. The general goals can be broken down into profession, family, home, school, physical and spiritual. Establish priorities so you will know which should come first before the other.

They do not know the process of personal goal setting. Knowing how to do something is one very strong reason for you to do so. If you do not know the steps, processes, strategies, and methods, you would most probably not spend the time working on setting and reaching goals.

The likelihood of failure will always haunt you. This can be the result of goal-setting which is too high or very low. Either way, you can only offset this by believing in yourself. Do not adopt the mentality of being afraid to screw up. Everyone commits mistakes but these errors should not bring you down. Keep in mind that the uncertainties of people are often without basis. It does not matter if other people criticize or mock you. The more important thing is to be successful.

They are afraid to fail. Most people refuse to set goals because they are scared of failure. Fear of failure can be the greatest obstacle towards success. If you do not overcome your fear, you will never be successful in personal goal setting simply because people naturally avoid that which they fear the most. You must find out why are you terrified of failing then think of ways that will help you beat that fear. You need to be stronger than your fear.
