Nails are coated with material that prevent them from rusting. There are different types of nails including finishing nails, common nails, roofing nails, masonry nails, tracks, as well as corrugated joiners. Each type has its own use. For example, common nails are general purpose construction nails suitable for framing structures. Box nails on the other hand are used for end nailing and light household use.

The other type of hardwear fastening devices is screws. These are threaded rods of a steel rods with heads on one end. They come in different types including cross-slotted, square, slotted, or hexagonal. They are stronger than nails when it comes to fastening objects together and are easy to remove. You can easily identify each type by the way the head is sunk on the surface of the object fastened. Some screws are fastened deep into the material, some are partially sunk, and others have their heads just on the surface.

Screws are used on both wood and metal materials for home or industrial applications. The surface they are used on determines the type of material that would be suitable and effective. Wood screws are usually made from steel though other metals are used which prevent corrosion. Sheet metal screws are made from steel or brass and are coated to prevent rusting. Screws used on metal surfaces are available in different gauges and length according to the thickness and texture of the metal.

There are also bolts and nuts that are used for fastening wood and metal. Bolts come in three types. There are the carriage bolts, stove bolts and machine bolts. Carriage bolts are the best choice for wood work. Their round head and coarse threads make them ideal for fastening wood and card boards.

The other type of bolts is machine bolts, which have either hexagonal or round head. They come in big sizes and their threads range from fine to coarse. They come in different sizes and thicknesses. Expansion and toggle bolts are small in size and are commonly used for light work such as fastening picture frames.

Another common type of fastener is the clamp. Clamps are an example of temporary fasteners and are usually used to hold materials for a short time as they are worked on.
