Veterans Day, The Right Way

By Jim Thorpe

Veterans day is a great day for all of the United States of America to come together and celebrate those who have sacrificed leaving there families, to come closer as a country, and to help commemorate the soldiers and those serving us now and those who gave their life for our wonderful country.

The particular challenges that come for student veterans can be combatted and overcome by the many benefits that are available for veteran students. Learning to use the resources available is an extremely important part of becoming a successful veteran student, and using your time wisely in college.

You may have changed but they will still think that you are the old you. Often times people who served feel like they are in a different level emotionally with their old friends who don't have the same experiences from serving. Be understanding and when necessary, have a discussion designed to help both parties understand better.

Time in the military is important and encompasses a wide variety of training. The many levels of training in the military can also be compensated with college credit, and as you learn of the potential to gain credit for your military experiences, you should be able to also decrease your stress and increase your passion for your future life and career.

If you know friends or family who have given service, then consider going to go visit them. Personally expressing to those close to you some gratitude can mean so much to them. If you don't personally know anyone, then consider going to a Veterans hospital or even have your little kids write him or her a letter of appreciation. Small tokens of gratitude can leave those that have served the United States with a feeling that outlasts their day.

The United States of America has set up many different programs and systems to help you when you return. There are discount in stores and services for veterans. There are also VA loans that are accessible for veterans. You helped the country succeed, and consequently, the USA wants to give back to you. Take advantage of VA loans, or VA home loans as you are getting back into the swing of things.

The unique experiences of each veteran have prepared them for their life, and as they are able to complete their education they will increase their own opportunities and the opportunities of their families. As we strive to recognize our veterans more fully, it is important to support them through their educational endeavors. As veterans have sacrificed their time and a significant portion of their lives to the safety and liberty of our country, they deserve the opportunity to become exactly what they want to be.

It can take time trying to be a civilian again. Be patient with yourself, and be patient with others. Give yourself meaningful activities to do such as community involvement and when necessary, go see a specialist that can help you talk some of your troubles out.
