An Overview Of Statistics For Lawyers

By Linda Ruiz

Statistics has always been one of the most practical types of math in the entire world because many professions would use it like business, law, and even in the medical world. Now it is especially very important in the world of law because lawyers would need it in order to be able to get proper evidence. Now if one would want to know more about statistics for lawyers, here is some information about it.

Now pretty much everyone who is in this field would make use of statistics like the lawyers, the judges, the investigators, the prosecutors, and pretty much everyone there. Now this type of math would be used in the documentation of the evidence and of course all the information that would be used in cases. Since all the information has to be factual, then they would have to undergo some statistical treatment first.

Now one of the first things that one would be learning would be data types. Basically, this lesson would first classify each type of data so that one would be able to know what type of treatment he will use on that certain type. There are many subcategories under this lesson like data with one variable, data with two variables, and many more other subcategories that may be useful in the field.

There would also be the lesson when it comes to probability. Now probability is probably one of the most important parts of law because it involves knowing how to come up with figures that would be able to supply evidence for a certain case or situation. Of course there are also a lot of subcategories under this one as well.

Some of the subcategories that one would be learning here is random sampling, purposive sampling and other types of sampling methods. One will also be learning all about basic probabilities like basic probability and conditional probability. Of course a concept that would really be emphasized is the Bayes rule.

Now another very important part that students should learn is inferential statistics. Now this would include such lessons like point estimation and hypothesis testing. Now this is a very important part of this lesson because in law cases, one would often test out a hypothesis that they made to check whether what they believe is real or not.

Of course there would also be regression which would break down into linear and multiple regression. Now in the linear regression, one is trying to connect two concepts with each other namely the independent variable and the dependent variable. Of course for the multiple regression, one will be trying to find the relationship of one variable to multiple other dependent variables.

So if one would take up statistics in this field, here are some of the topics that he will be learning. One of the great things about teachers of law is that they would make use of a lot of legal cases for the students to learn. By making use of short cases, students will be able to apply the theories that they would learn during their class time.
