Floristry Tips From The Pros

By Winnie Cox

All florists always aim for a professional result for every piece of flower arrangement and decoration they make. Aside from rendering creative pieces of floral designs, their works exhibit mastery of the techniques that make every flower arrangement a masterpiece.

A florist, in order to produce an impressive flower display, needs to keep in mind these three factors: design, theme and setting. These are key elements in designing and decorating flowers. Strategic integration of these elements in any floral decorating project can guarantee a fulfilling outcome.

Design is the totality of the choices that florists make, especially in terms of the materials used and chosen, to achieve a maximum visual appeal. In its technical sense, design pertains to colors, shapes, form and texture. Other principles that need to be incorporated in the design are the following: balance, proportion, rhythm, contrast, dominance and harmony. All these elements are important to the outcome of any floristry project.

What gives substance to the design is the texture. This element boosts the visual appeal of the flower arrangement. The texture of a design can be either visual or actual. Visual texture helps people "feel" in their mind whether the material is spiky, rough or smooth even without actually touching the thing.

Florists also have to think of the practical side of floral arranging and decorating. All the materials used in floristry have a monetary cost. Therefore, florists need to learn the art of creating a budget plan. Failing to do so may limit the florist's capability to achieve professional looking floral arrangements. Having a solid set of plan also helps florists create a fantastic designs even without spending that much.

Prioritizing customers' requests is necessary as well. Florists offer different floral arrangements not only to fulfill creative interests but also to help people achieve their dream wedding bouquet, send some comfort, make someone's day great and make him/her feel loved. Florists also play an important role in helping people express affection for a departed loved one.
