Consequences Of Sci Fi Games In The Development Of Children

By Patrice McCoy

Science fiction is a type of fiction which involves future findings and technological and scientific developments. The concept of sci-fi is developed from bringing together present and past concepts and generated and entirely new idea. It is partly exaggerated but contains a few aspects of actual facts. Sci fi games are based on the concept of developing a virtual world. People play the games by controlling a virtual personality.

From the parent's viewpoint, the gaming events are commendable, as they are a realistic ways to encourage their children to remain indoors. In addition the children can spend time and take part in competitions with their friends at the pleasure of where they stay. This is facilitated by the fact that the game has a multiplayer online interface. This would beneficial given the criminal levels in most areas in the west where the parents are consistently away from their children due to work obligations.

There have been suggestions that these competitions open up a child's mind to the world of technology and boost their imaginative and creative capacity. These sporting events may have features that incorporate the use of a given virtual technological device which creates a certain curiosity in a child to actually learn how that device works in real life. A child who is more technologically- aware is better cut out to face the challenges of the increasingly technologically-oriented world.

On the flip side though, most of the activities mentioned do more harm than good. Most of them use war and fights as a tactic for the players to get ahead. The person who slays most opponents in their quest for victory is deemed the hero. This cultivates a violent culture in the sub-conscious mind of the player. Studies have shown that children who played violent activities were observed to be more aggressive than their peers who did not.

Scientific fiction games have also been shown to affect the brain, and especially the areas concerned with attention, concentration, emotions and restraint of impulses. Children who frequently spend long hours playing these games have a lower response to emotional issues and their concentration on things that are less fictional is wanting.

Playing these games has been found to be chemically addictive, as was stated by Dr. Paul Grasby of Hammersmith Hospital, London. Dopamine, a hormone associated with pleasure, is produced twice as much in a player's brain when playing these games. This explains the addiction to gaming observed in most players of these games.

A person can be too engrossed into the virtual world that they lose touch with the real world. This is observed in a child's inability to socialize and make real friends. These children may be observed to have imaginary friends who are characters in their favorite sporting events, whom they treat as though they were alive and part of their social life. This behavior may be carried on to adulthood, making the person in question to be a social misfit with no friends.

In order to help children create and maintain healthy relationships, all parents should take it upon themselves to include outdoor activities to the child's play routine. The outdoor activities include human connections and help improve their social skills. The demerits of sci fi games far outweigh the merits.
