Why BJJ is important for Self Defense

By Sensei Ken Sumner

When defending yourself, Physical defense happens less than 10% of the time, while Martial Arts training rains almost exclusively on the physical defense, why? Well here we find out.

A person with high self confidence can change an attack very quickly. Most conflicts can be diffused or avoided altogether due to a person's confidence and how they respond to an aggressive person. If a attacker is met with confidence from the person being attacked, then the attacker will react much differently. They are less likely to continue the attack. The confidence that a person needs to defend against one of these attacks is that they can defense themselves. By having this self confidence, they are less likely to get into an altercation due to having the confidence because the attackers will not attack with the same frequency.

From this knowledge of being able to defend themselves, they have the confidence to stand up and say what is needed or to just stand up. This specific confidence comes from the Belt System and sparring practice that is employed by training Brazilian Jiujitsu. The Act of training martial arts, then having a distinct concrete reward after that training (the Colored belt). Essentially the self confidence comes from setting a goal, and then accomplishing it. This in itself is one of the greatest aspects to martial arts and accomplishes many of the mental sides like self Confidence.

Physical actions in a Self-Defnese Situation will be the backup in a physical altercation, which is why Brazilian Jiujitsu train the physical action so much.

Unfortunately there are times where confidence, or words fail, then actions need to take over. BJJ have spend a lot of time travelling the world to find the most effective self-defense. Recently I had a student, who was 16 years old and was travelling to Spain for a school trip. She had an encounter with a pickpocket who lunged at her, trying to get her shoulder.

She did exactly what we had trained, and was able to get him to leave her alone, plus her friends that she was shopping with. Brazilian jiujitsu taught her the confidence, and the ability to defend herself. By her own admission had she not done Brazilian Jiujitsu, this would not have happened, and actually possibly the trip wouldn't' have happened either. This self defence provided a lot for her.
