Kinetic Sculpture Artists Create A Broad Variety Of Unique Sculptures

By Eugenia Dickerson

Kinetic art provides artists with a wide array of possibilities, and many individuals are kinetic sculpture artists. Some kinetic sculptures rely on some kind of movement to be functional, and others contain one or more parts that visibly implement motion. A sculpture may also do both of the aforementioned things. The results are often imaginative and exciting, and there are countless examples of such sculptures that one might consider.

A miniature windmill is an ideal example of such a piece of sculpted art. The windmill moves when wind blows on it. The parts slowly stop moving, once the air currents have ceased to move. To keep the windmill in constant motion, an artist could place a fan behind it.

Another example of such art is a sculpted object known as a mobile, which could be suspended from a nail in a wall or ceiling. One such mobile may be spiral in shape, and it might be made from materials like wood, metal or plaster. Depending on its particular construction, a mobile could easily move when a person touches it, or it might not move very easily. How long it stays in motion depends on a variety of factors.

A series of springs and wheels that propel one another could be regarded as kinetic art. The interior part of a clock or watch might be used as an example of such art. When a person winds up one of its parts, the interior of a timepiece may be set in motion. A large sculpture that is suspended from a ceiling might implement this concept very well.

Wind chimes and fountains might also be regarded as art that relies on motion to function. In a fountain, water is propelled through one or more outlets, and the result is a visual display of moving water. Many fountains have complex designs, and a person who creates such fountains could certainly be described as a kinetic sculpture artist. Wind chimes depend on air to move their parts, and like fountains, they can be created in many unique and complex ways.

Movement-related artwork can be formed to look like a wide variety of things. A piece might be shaped to resemble the sun, with several long rays that extend like arms. Another piece might resemble a sailboat moving across a body of water.

Sculptures may also be created to look like living things. A piece could be molded into the shape of a bird, with wings that move. A figurine might resemble a moving tree or flower. Sculptures may be molded in the shape of various kinds of people, from tiny babies to storybook giants. A piece might be formed to look like several ballet dancers in motion.

Designing artwork that moves is something that countless kinetic sculpture artists enjoy doing. A sculpture that relies on motion can be exciting to observe. Examples of such pieces seem almost endless, from sculptures that are shaped like eagles, to miniature wind chimes, to big outdoor fountains. It can be inspiring and thought-provoking to view such artworks. Many of these sculptures have been seen in shopping malls, banks, art galleries, and museums across the world.
