Pleasanton CA Based Companionship Services For Elderly People Fills A Real Need

By Deanne Shepard

One of the worst things, for elderly people, is being alone, all of the time. They will be in their homes or, possibly just their room, without having anything to occupy their time except their memories. One good thing that has been around for quite some time has been a system of companionship services for elderly folks that helps in many cases.

Often you will see these services offered in the personal services section of any newspaper. There will be business cards or announcements hanging on community boards from an individual or company offering this. If you or one of your loved ones is in a situation that needs this type of service and you are not in a position to help them, a call would be informative.

No matter what each person or service offers, what they deliver will be a kindness and the simple companionship the elderly really needs. They can be there for an amount of time that will allow for continuity and a friendly transition from one segment of the day to another. Most of what happens is reading, talking together and chores that need done. Just being there for these people goes a long way toward making them feel better about their situation.

One of those minor, yet very important tasks, is helping them dress. This was something they used to do and they find it, occasionally, embarrassing to not be able to button all of the buttons or zip those pesky zippers. Having someone help with this, in a dignified, discreet way, helps a lot. It does not even need to be all of the latest fashions, they have their ideas about what looks good on them and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Most of these services, in Pleasanton CA, must undergo a thorough training period. They must understand such things as first aid and CPR as well as a common symptoms of danger. They will be physically able to help folks into and out of bed as well as recovery from a fall and assisting them up stairs.

They will not be involved, in any large way, with the administering of any medications, especially not in a structured care setting. They may have involvement while in a home setting. They will follow all directions from the doctor involved and will report to them when appropriate.

Walking with them on the grounds or taking them to the store are all parts of this companionship. Working with them on their hair and helping them bathe and put on make up is on that list as well. This may also include such tasks as cleaning their kitchen, doing some laundry or helping them dust the living spaces.

There will always be a real need for personal services such as these. When you have no one else, due to death or geographic dislocation, it is quite helpful and life affirming to have help in many of the small things. People being willing to perform these tasks and personal services, even if they must be paid, is a real life saver.
