Tips On How To Store Leather Goods Safely

Leather products are very costly and luxurious and therefore, they should be handled and stored in care. The products from this material can last for a lifetime if only they are stored and maintained in the right way. You need to treat leather items with care same way you would take care of your vehicle. When leather goods are stored appropriately, you will be amazed by how they look even after staying with them for a long time from the day you bought them.

When storing leather products such as shoes, you will definitely need to use an acid-free stuffing paper to retain their shape. Nevertheless, using an acid paper will attack the material and cause damage to it. Only use acid-free stuffing paper whenever you need to stuff your products.

When it comes to the clothes, it is advisable that you hang them using the wooden hangers instead of using the plastic ones. The reason behind this idea is that the plastic hangers are vulnerable to a certain deformation known as creep which causes the damage on the leathers. It is also advisable that you avoid folding the leathers so as to prevent any creases.

Before you store the leathers, it is also important to apply significant conditioners or moisturizer made specifically for them. This is because they have a component of lanolin, beeswax, and also coconut oil. The substances are very useful since they protect the materials from moisture and dirt.

Ensure you store the leather items in a well-ventilated container. By using an airtight container will cause all the moisture to build up and finally damage your product. A well-aerated container allows for the frequent in and out the flow of air ensuring the items keep fresh with no odor at all.

Think of getting a good dehumidifier and place it to your storage area. This is necessary as it absorbs excessive moisture thereby preventing damage to your stored goods. Moisture is necessary for preventing cracking of the material, but it is only required in moderate amount. Too much of it ends up damaging the products. Also, avoid keeping your leather items in direct sunlight. This is because sunlight is the worst enemy of the material. It destroys the fibers present in the material making it dry and eventually cracks. Sun is a bleaching agent and may look your products look pale and faded. To avoid this, always store your items in a cool dark place.

In case any drink spill on the materials, it is recommended that you wipe it out using a soft cloth that is absorbent as soon as possible. It is also advisable to you soak your piece of cloth in a mixture of water and soap that has less detergent. You should also avoid using hairspray and perfumes since they have chemicals that are known to harm the leathers.
