Surveying a garden in preparation for a new greenhouse

By Andrew North

The positioning of a new greenhouse is the first thing you need to think about before going ahead and getting one. This is because the style and type of greenhouse is obviously important, but you need to be sure it will fit in with your garden layout.

Certain factors are always going to be more important than others when it comes to the placement of greenhouses. Through the rest of this post we will be looking at this topic. Choosing the ideal position, while bearing aspect in mind is crucial to gaining sun exposure.

Now you have done that, you need to ensure the foundations are level. The base of the greenhouse should ideally be fixed to a hard surface such as flag stones and not simply laid on soil. This is so that you can create a decent floor area for the greenhouse.

The elements are another factor that needs to be considered as strong winds can have a huge impact on the structure of the greenhouse, unless protection is put in place. One way to achieve this is to position the garden building nearer to fences or hedges to act as a shield.

One thing you need to address and certainly not overlook like many people mistakenly do these days is to keep access to the greenhouse at the forefront of your mind. You would want this place to be as near to the shed and the house as possible in order that what is growing inside is never neglected.

Having an electrical supply to hand and access to water is the final area that should not become an afterthought. Once this has been looked at you can get down to the exciting business of browsing greenhouses to find the most appealing one for your garden.
