Various Ways Of Installing Pool Lights Safely

By Byron Jonas

When doing any kind of repairs or renovations the most important thing to remember is safety. Whether underwater or surface lighting, the installation of pool lighting is no different. There are various ways of installing pool lights safely when doing any kind of renovations or add-ons.

The installation of lighting can make a major difference in a swimming area adding convenience and longer pool hours. Underwater and above ground lighting comes in one of two forms: battery powered or cord powered. Each option requires a slightly different installation process but one requires more work than the other and can lead to a longer battery life. Each option should be chosen according to availability and owner preference.

To avoid using heavy and dangerous machinery that construction workers use, it is best to choose suction-mounted lighting and to know the size of the area it is going to cover. Without using the suction-mounted light you will have to drain your pool and drill holes in it.

Before starting to install the fixtures, it is necessary to read the manual that comes with the light. You should always assemble the light according to the manual. Before installing the fixture, test the sealant of the light to make sure moisture stays on the outside. You can dip the fixture into a bucket of water to test the seal, if you see bubbles then the seal needs to be redone.

After the light is sealed, the source of the power for the light needs to be secured. Many of the lighting may be battery powered so simply add the batteries to the light. If the light requires a cord there is a need to set up an outlet or a waterproof junction box if an outlet is not available. The junction box needs to be attached to an existing power line.

When a source line has been secured do a test run to make sure the light actually works. If it is working properly follow the manual guidelines and mount it on the designated area. Once the light has been mounted all the hard work it out of the way and the only other thing to do is sit back and relax. This process is mainly for vinyl liner or concrete pools and spas.

A lighting system can be used for underground or above ground pools. The light needs to be fully underwater to prevent it from overheating. Also, if you notice water behind the lens, allow the light to dry and replace the gasket on the light for an easy fix.
