By Jerry Welsh

Hundreds of dogs die from food poisoning every year. Dogs would not pass up the chance to roam. The nose is a very important asset of a dog. Apart from being food motivated, dogs are known to be indiscriminate eaters. Dogs, even well fed ones would never pass up the chance to rummage trash cans and feast on rotting and spoiled food. Hence, food poisoning is one of the common health concerns of dogs.

Food poisoning commonly occur because of the dog's voracious appetite but this health concern can be due to other reasons as well. Commercially prepared dog food can poison the dog too but not many owners are aware of this fact. The dog's food poisoning can be caused by commercial dog food. Unaware that the commercial food is contaminated, the dog will receive scoop after scoop of the food thereby building up the toxins in the dog's body.

Food poisoning, just like any other health issues can be prevented from causing the dog serious harm if detected early. For the safety of the pet, it is vital for a dog owner to know the signs of food poisoning. Dogs have an amazing defense mechanism against poisoning. Dogs would simply eat grass to be able to remove anything that was not accepted by the stomach. The dog's vomiting may not flush out all the ingested toxins.

Dogs that are allowed to wander have all the opportunities to eat rotten food. Food poisoning can occur if a new diet is introduced. Vomiting is one of the signs of food poisoning. Diarrhea is another sign that the dog has ingested a toxic substance. To flush the toxic substance from its system the dog would vomit and have diarrhea. Food poisoning will make the dog drool and appear sluggish. Food poisoning can cause the dog to turn away from food. A yellowish tint in the eyes and bright orange colored urine signify that the toxins remaining in the dogs body is already affecting its organs. Vomiting blood, blackened stool, seizures and loss of motor skills are advanced signs of food poisoning. Dogs would totally refuse food. Worried dog owners would tempt the dog with the dog food mixed with human food thereby aggravating the condition if the poisoning is caused by the contaminated dog food.

Symptoms associated with food poisoning like vomiting and diarrhea can be corrected by fasting the dog for 24 for hours to give the stomach a chance to rest. Bland food like boiled rice and chicken can be given after the dog was fasted. But if the condition of the dog worsen, a vet's attention will be very necessary.
