Security 101 for the Home Owner

By Mark Mahaffey

No matter who you are or where you live, you are in danger of crime. If you watch the news on television or listen to it on the radio, you know that the threat of being a victim is very real. It is one thing to be in danger when you are out and about, but when you are home, it is important to be able to relax as much as possible and not worry about crime.

There are several things you can do to increase the level of residential security at your home, and doing so is smart. The FBI tells us that a property crime occurs every three seconds. For this reason, you must take responsibility for your safety. This article will help you understand a few ways that you can be as safe as possible.

Some home safety tips have to do with common sense actions. For example, keep your doors and windows locked!! Over one half of all burglaries are accomplished because the criminal was able to gain access to the home through doors or windows that were left unlocked! Locking your doors and windows takes just a few seconds, but it could keep you from being burglarized.

Is there a neighborhood watch program in your area? If not, you should consider starting one. If there are several people helping you keep an eye on your home, you will be much safer. And you can return the favor for them, by watching their house for them. They say there is safety in numbers, and this is especially true when it comes to neighborhood watches.

Making your doors as secure as possible is a savvy way of keep criminals out of your home. Tempered glass around your front door is a must, because you need strong glass there. Burglars will not think twice about destroying glass if it will allow them to reach their arm through to unlock your door. Also, if your doors do not have dead bolts installed on them, hire someone to do this for you. They are very strong.

You may not think of your landscaping as part of your home security, but it is! Big bushes near your house make great hiding places for crooks. And if there are trees near your home, they can be used as ladders for accessing the windows of your upper story. Consider changing your landscaping!
