How To Make Senior Home Care More Feasible

By Stephanie Riggle

If you have an elderly relative living at home, you may want to consider senior home care so you will not have to be apart from your loved one. Old people may have limited physical abilities. You might need to make your house senior friendly even if you have hired help to look after them.

Rearrange furniture in the house to prevent your old relative from tripping and bumping into fixtures. Use lightweight water containers in the refrigerator that are easy for older people to grip. Avoid using heavy and large glass jugs to avoid accidents and breakage.

Install phone devices with large keypads and numerical figures that can be deciphered easily. Make sure that the pathway towards the bathroom and telephone is always well lit. Old people usually had bad vision and the lights and large numbers on the phone or television remote control will help them see well.

Avoid placing many mirrors around the house. This may confuse elderly people, especially those who are stricken with dementia. People with this condition may be startled with their own reflection since they may not recognize themselves in the mirror. Keep mirrors in your own bathroom or bedroom to prevent seniors in the house from seeing them.

Old people often have a difficult time dressing themselves. It might be helpful to place only a few items in their wardrobe closet to make it easier for senior relatives to pick outfits for the day. Try to get clothes in neutral shades like grey, cream, black and navy to make it simpler to match shirts with pants or skirts.

Due to the difficulty of handling this kind of set up at home, it will be beneficial for both you and your elderly relative to get a senior home care provider. This way, you get to have some free time for yourself. A professional caregiver should also know how to attend to your loved one in an expertly manner.
