South Africa chosen for filming of new Bond film

By Ursula Hague

Despite reports that much of Bond 23 would be filmed on location in India, the people behind the film have now confirmed that it will in fact be South Africa that provides the backdrop for a significant portion of the film.

It was understood that permission had been granted by India's Information and Broadcasting Ministry for filming at a number of locations, including Delhi, without disruption. Indeed, India Railways told reporters that there was never any objection to Bond being filmed in India. However, there was also a suggestion that local authorities in the country were unenthusiastic about allowing EON Productions to film the latest instalment of the long-running spy franchise.

Now that India's Take One Productions has ruled out the possibility of Bond being filmed there, South Africa has taken India's place as the main location for the new film.

India Railways would have been involved in some of the planned scenes, and the organisation's executive director has maintained that EON productions never faced any objections to its plans, which had been discussed in detail. He made reference to plans for shooting a scene "between Mumbai and Goa on the hero train," indicating that the team behind Bond wanted "a special shot where a motorcycle from a bridge would jump on to a train, and the coach on which he'd jump needed to be re-enforced." India Railways were happy to facilitate this, but for reasons that remain unclear, filming in India has been abandoned.

What the above statement does do is give a tantalising insight into the plot and action of the film, which will no doubt be full of adventure and thrills. As well as the scenes shot in South Africa, there will be some filming on location in Istanbul, whilst the UK's Pinewood Studios will also be used. The film will be directed by Sam Mendes, with Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem co-starring alongside Daniel Craig. Naomie Harris will play Miss Moneypenny, and rumour has it that Q may even be re-introduced.
