A Argument As To Whether Co-Location Is A Better Choice Than Going For Dedicated Hosting

By John Winter

The importance of having an IT facility to the success of the business is a known fact among many small businesses as well as new businesses.. However, the initial cost of setting up an IT facility in addition to the extra cost of staffing and maintenance is not something that all of them can afford.. The IT solution of such businesses can of course be met in two ways. Renting a dedicated server is the first option, the second option is known ascolocation services..

Renting a dedicated server simply involves the company that need IT services to rent a server from a company that rents out servers instead of buying its own servers.. The company would however, have complete control over the server and the company's It staff can use the server to meet its IT needs as deemed fit..

With hosting colocation, the company keeps it sever with a company rendering colocation services on a communal site usually along with other companies.. The responsibility of safe keeping and maintenance of servers as well as updating information on behalf of the client is the main job of a colocation company.

There are obviously both advantages and disadvantages to dedicated servers and colocation, but the advantages of colocation, invariably makes it a preferred choice to renting a dedicated server. Before you can start needing a server then it is assumed that you have website which is expected to generate much traffic in the near future. When a website generates much traffic it uses up a lot of bandwidth and this can be expensive, your IT staff should be able to give you an idea of how much it would cost and you can project what that amount would add to the overhead cost of running your business. With colocation, you don't have to worry about the rate at which your site consumes band width and how much it costs, that is for the colocation company to worry about.

Colocation also gives you the time and energy to focus on your business core. constantly worrying about keeping your IT systems in good condition use up lots of time and energy.. Losing sight of your values and business mission is also possible when you get enmeshed in keeping a functional IT facility and keeping off all threats. However, collocations companies have already covered all the angles.. They usually have an automatic backup system for generating electricity in the advent of power outage.. There can be no loss of data because they have measures in place to prevent this and if it happens, there are fast recovery strategies in place.. In addition, colocation ensures that you have a team of dedicated staff monitoring your server 24 hours in a day.. In essence, the maintenance of the server is not yours to worry about, the best part is that keeping your server offsite protects it from unauthorized access which could lead to your data being stolen.
