The ChildHelp Celebrity Golf Event

By Mitchell Sussman

Cheryl Ladd and John O'Hurley are the hots of an annual golf event benefiting Childhelp. Known as the Celebrity Golf Invitational it was recently held at Porcupine Creek and the Indian Wells Golf Resort held each January in the California desert.

My friends and I put together a foursome that included actor, producer and football star Fred "the Hammer" Williamson for tw days of fantastic golf action. The first day of golf was at Oracle founder and billionaire Larry Ellison's Porcupine Creek estate and private golf course in Rancho Mirage. The second day we played at the Indian Wells Golf Resort on the Celebrity Course that is known for its well maintained greens and serene atmosphere.

In addition to two days of great golf there were three nights of parties which were held at Hyatt Grand Champions Ballroom. The invitational wrapped up with a Monday night gala followed by an awards banquet on Tuesday. A variety of fantastic awards were given to the top golfing foursome teams as well as the group that came closest to the pin.

Baseball great Johnny Bench was the top celebrity winner. Over 25 amazing celebrities participated in the event and each team was paired with a different celebrity each of the two days. Among some of the other daily celebrity winners were baseball Hall of Famer Steve Garvey, football player & actor Ed Marinaro, lead guitarist Tommy Thayer from KISS, Dancing with the Stars personality Tony Dovolina, All My Children Actor John Callahan, and lead singer from the rock group Loverboy Mike Reno. Beside the golf awards, there were other honors that were extended to those that had been huge supporters of ChildHelp.

Donors like Ron and Sherrie Auen from the Berger foundation and "Wild Bill" Bill Laughlin were a few of those that were congratulated for their untiring work and generosity. There were also silent and live auctions which brought in many dollars to help the charity. And thanks to John O'Hurley making requests, others gave thousands of dollars from their own pockets. But the highlight of that event came when "Wild Bill" donated $100,000 to help build an outdoor recreation center. It was incredible as mouths dropped and breaths gasp at the generosity that was extended.

The attendees were introduced to the Founders of ChildHelp by Sara O"Meara and Yvonne Fedderson who spoke to the many guests in attendance and thanked them for their hard work in the name of charity and the children. Co-Chairs Ken Rizzotto and Judy Jensen received a special thank you for the work of creating a special event.

As the night concluded it was time to enjoy the smooth sounds of singer Jon Secada along with a variety of bands that played the final night, allowing guests the opportunity to show off their dance moves. Movie star actress, Goldie Hawn made an appearance at the Gala, showing her support for the Childhelp charity that has helped over 200,000 children last year alone and over 5 million since it started. If there ever was an event that was needed, this is it right here. And the stars that came out and attended spoke loudly in their commitment to a cause that is bigger than a game.
