Expert advice on gardening from spring to summer

By Yvonne Ludeman

Most of the effort in hobby gardening work is carried out in the spring months. Other times on the calendar are focused on attempting to reduce the effect of poor weather on gardens. Gardeners can perform a number of varying tasks and activities for good results. Most individuals discover their own methods of controlling their backyard that is suited to them.

In addition it can be seen that each hobbyist does things in their own way, but the main activities are essentially no different. A number of gardening procedures are absolutely needed when gardening in summer and spring. This content looks to bring up the most important procedures that need completed so you can plan accordingly.

Primarily ensuring that the earth in your garden is prepared for growing is important. What this does is make certain that the earth has the right minerals it needs to grow plant life. Under normal conditions minerals would be deposited into the soil in from leaves in autumn. The problem is that as homeowners we often clean up this mess which removes minerals from the plant's life cycle. This means that substitute nutrients need to be placed down.

Plant bedding can be topped up easily by rotating the earth and adding in other fertiliser. What this does is allow fresh soil to combine with the older exhausted ground. This procedure is not as simple for turf grass however. The reason being that rotating the soil cannot be done, not simply anyway. Turf grass needs to undergo a process called top dressing in order to be fertilised.

Top dressing is where you spread a thin layer of fertiliser over the surface of the lawn. This can be done either manually or automatically. Depending on the time you have and the size of your lawn you can make your choice. Manual spreading of topsoil is a lengthy task but it saves you the expense of buying or renting a top dresser or spreader.

When you want to go through this process manually the best thing to do is get a bucket and a trowel. This way you can take one trowel of fertiliser at a time and scatter it over the lawn evenly in sections. This can be a difficult process to get right, primarily due to making sure the fertiliser is spread evenly across your lawn.

Operating a machine based top dresser creates a much simpler task. It is as easy as filling the container with fertilised soil and pushing the device over your turf in equal strips. This will make sure that the fertiliser is spread evenly throughout your grass.

Aiming to make certain that your backyard is fertile and ready for growth in spring is important. Plant-life and grass needs the right conditions to grow in from the season's beginning. The process is about preparing in advance. Fertilising only when growth starts will mean plants never reach their ultimate potential.
