Minimizing the Chance of Residential Fire

By Jack Landry

One of the best things you can do to get through an emergency situation is to be properly prepared for it. Disasters can strike any place at any time, so being ready well ahead of that time gives you a vital edge.

First, you should be sure that you know why you need to remove the mold. Some people struggle understanding that mold is dangerous and although not all mold is going to be dangerous, when the mold is dangerous it can be deadly and very troublesome.

If you have any type of mold in your home, you have to understand how you are going to identify whether it is dangerous or not. Even when the mold is not dangerous, you are going to want to get rid of it in your home so it does not turn into a dangerous type or damage your home.

Of course, more expansive food storage is always recommended. By having a couple of weeks' worth of food and water put away in a secure and accessible place, you will be able to deal with all but the most severe of disasters.

A fire can be deadly in a home in a matter of minutes. Time is of the essence and it is absolutely necessary that everyone in the home knows what they are supposed to do in the case of a fire to keep themselves safe and to try and minimize damage to the home.

Start by opening the windows and doors so you are going to have ventilation throughout your home. Make sure that you are getting fresh air into your home but you should also watch to ensure that you are not allowing the mold to blow throughout your home.

When you start cleaning up the mold, you want to make sure that you are not touching it with your bare hands. Put on some gloves to ensure that you can clean the mold off without it coming into contact with your skin while you are cleaning.

Each home owner should have working smoke alarms throughout their entire home. They should be checked every six months to ensure that the battery is still working and to ensure that they are going to go off and make the right noise should there be a fire.

By drilling ahead of time and knowing what to do, families will be able to respond to the situation in the best and safest way possible. As a part of the contingency plan, everyone should know where the nearest emergency shelter is.

After everyone gets out of the home, they should know where to go to stay safe. Setting up a meeting place for your household will ensure that everyone knows where to go once they get out of the house and it will also help everyone know who is still inside of the house.

When authorities come you can notify them of who is in the house. This way, the authorities can help you safely.
