Depression is a very serious disease that can make functioning seem impossible. It can impair every aspect of your life, and make simple things like getting out of bed and eating seem very hard to do. If you are feeling depressed, consider joining a church. Churches offer wonderful support networks and uplifting messages. They also offer a spiritual connection to a higher being, which can have a positive effect on a depressed state of mind. If you are unable to leave your home to reach a church, consider contacting one for a personal visit from the Pastor to receive some of the same benefits.

To optimize your healing process when depressed, make whatever small efforts you can manage as often as possible. Focus on things that make you happy and keep you engaged and avoid stressors. Something as simple as walking in a place you like or calling a supportive friend is all it takes to give yourself some much-needed encouragement and relief.

Often times when we are feeling depressed, we tend to keep quite. Doing the opposite, and talking to someone, can actually be more effective. When you keep your feelings bottled up inside it can have negative consequences on your body, mind, and soul. Finding a trusted friend or family member to talk to lets you get things out in the open, and release some of that negative anxiety.

If you are feeling depressed, it might be time to evaluate your friendships. Some friends can be toxic, and damaging to your health. Sometimes cutting such people out of your life can be beneficial. If you surround yourself with happy individuals who are mentally healthy, you just might start to feel that way too.

Medication from a doctor may not always be the right answer in dealing with depression. A poor diet that is not rich in vitamins can be a cause as well, so by medicating you're not getting rid of the root problem. Try getting a vitamin supplement and start there. B vitamins are proven to help with depression, as well as many others so maybe your answer is in your diet!

To be ready for the next time you need a mood boost, make a list of things that will cheer you up, and put that list in one place. Include things that cheer you up, like your favorite movies, books or CDs. Or write down little activities to do, such as talking a walk or working on a project.

A support group can provide a wonderful means of dealing with depression. Sometimes you might feel like you are the only one dealing with a particular problem. This is likely not true. A support group will connect you with individuals who have experienced what you are experiencing. It can provide a great outlet for your emotions, and wonderful resources for coping too.

When depression sets in, it's time to reevaluate your priorities in life. Some people think they cannot be happy without a lover, a ton of money, a new house, or any number of other things. Realizing that you can be happy with who you are, and where you are, in life can have a very powerful effect.

Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs if you are dealing with depression. These substances are clinical depressants, and will enhance your depressed state of mind. They can have powerful negative effects on you body, mind, and soul. You will never find relief if you are inhibiting your body with these substances. If you can't stop using them on your own, seek professional help.

Don't constantly complain and expect sympathy from friends and family members. Oftentimes your loved ones show sympathy towards your depressive behavior which fuels the fire to enable your bad behavior further. Don't do things that are just a side effect of depression to show you're depressed. Instead, try to dwell on positive things and eliminate negativity.
