Suited And Booted: Women's Autumn/Winter 2011/12 Collection

By Peter Broad

With autumn looming and the promise of colder weather, boots have sauntered back onto the scene, Mod designs are back with a bang in knee-high boots, go gender-neutral with ankle-high footwear or embrace the biker within with calf-length boots, whatever your preference there's a boot to suit.

Fashionable footwear in women's designer wear is truly embracing the boot thanks to the range of options on offer and diversity that mean the boot wonderfully fulfils any brief, formal or casual. First up, the ankle boot eases into preppy style with London designer Pointer, walking over winter in Caz boots complete with fur-lining to fend off the cold, say no to cold toes in the 100% waterproof Farai design or go for the soft practicality of the suede KC's and their relaxed approach to staying warm this autumn. Jimmy Choo creates a sneaker boot hybrid in the Tokyo ankle boot in suede and leopard print and Miu Miu create a high top combo in patent leather.

Won Hundred, the progressive Danish label, is first on the scene to embrace the ankle boot in its androgynous glory, their Day Boots in leather capture the juxtaposition on manly cut and style with the womanly suede combined and a block heel, five inches that will certainly help you stand out from the crowd. Also getting on board with the style is Bertie that adds button to the basic style in Palare and YMC that embraces the Military ankle boot. American designer Mark McNairy has designed a Chelsea boot in waxed suede for comfortable relaxed style while Hasbeens, Swedish label specialising in hand-made footwear, mix classic stitching detail in the leather Chelsea boot complete with a 3.5 inch wooden heel.

Sessun, with trademark Parisian style, brings elegance to the ankle boot in the Robson boot in neutral with a block heel, it adds style and grace whether worn casual or smart for any occasion. Similarly Nicholas Kirkwood uses the block heel in the suede platformed ankle boot in non-shiny black or opt for colour in Dolly and Valentina in Kat Maconie's range, also bringing forward a re-emergence of velvet in the lovely Laura's.

Add a rocky edge with biker chick fashion additions of zips, chains and buckles to the calf-length boot, this detail help these shoes become more than just footwear but an essential accessory to your outfit. Miu Miu gives a great example in the form of their calf boot in suede complete with two buckles, or Ash adds studs to the buckled biker look, Air Step also goes grungy with Saint in leather, a fold-over cuff and buttoned look. For a less masculine look UGG Australia has the Josie boot in soft lamb suede to the calf in a rich chocolate and fold-over cuff, deep blue in velvet in Alaa's boot with ruching or add some height with the wedge heel of Ildiko from Beau Coops in three-quarter length suede with belt detail.

Go a little higher and you'll hit Jimmy Choo with the knee-high Doreen boot in waxed suede as well as Fiorentini & Baker, a celebrity favourite and it's not hard to see why with the Rabbit Multi Buckle Boot perfect whatever the weather when teamed with skinny jeans or leggings. Feminine and smart, Michel Vivien's Glasgow brings the knee-high boot into evening as does Le Silla's boot with stiletto heel and Selma from Tory Burch with platform heel.

With such a choice available in women's designer fashion it's easy to see how boots will be stepping up to help you stand out this autumn.
