Furnace Repair In Five Hundred Words

By Adriana Noton

When it comes to heat, and its applications in our daily lives, its importance cannot be stressed enough. Apart from the fact that we need heat from the sun to survive on earth, other activities, both economic and domestic require heat in order to take place. These activities range from cooking to smelting of metal ores and manufacture of glassware. These activities are made possible by heat generation in furnaces. When these furnaces break down, furnace repair is then called for.

Fuels like diesel and coal are the most common sources of fuel for heat production. They are burned in furnaces to produce the much needed heat. Furnaces are special burners designed specifically to withstand high temperatures and pressure. These special burners, like all equipment are subject to break down, but with the right guidance, you may be well on your way to fixing them on your own.

Gas leaks will probably occur if your furnace is gas operated. Be prepared for any gas leaks and be on the look out. Gas is pretty easy to detect because of its strong odor. Move out of the building as soon as you detect gas. Leave the door and windows open to let the gas escape.

Some early versions of both fuel and gas operated furnaces have in built pilot lights which may break down and refuse to stay on. The problem may be in the thermocouple, which may need merely readjusting or replacement. A clogged orifice may also cause such a problem. This easily solved by using a thin wire to unclog it.

The heat produced by the furnace may be very little or none at all. This could be caused by a wrongly set thermostat. Raise the temperature knob a few and wait to feel if there will be any effect. If none, check whether the filter is dirty. If it is, replace it immediately.

There could be several reasons as to why your furnace will not light at all. Tripped circuit breakers and blown fuses may be the culprits. Check all electrical panels and boards, ensuring everything is okay. A malfunctioning thermostat may also be the problem. If the system is a both heat and cool system, make sure that thermostat is set to heat.

The flame of the furnace may also fail to light. The most probable cause of this is that the intake system being clogged in the case of a liquid fuel furnace. If it is gas operated, First turn off the supply valve and make sure the pilot is on. If it is not, wait a few moments and turn it to pilot. Hold it as you light the flame then release it and fire it up after some minutes.

There are obviously a lot of advantages to doing your own furnace repairs. It saves you a lot of money and gives you the expertise you never had. Understanding furnace construction is vital if you work with them or even sell them. The kind of malfunction is what determines what kind of repair to do.
